Clogged tear ducts

Anyone's LO experience this? If so how did it turn out?

My LO is 1 week old and seems to be suffering from this in his right eye. As of now, because of the greenish/yellowish discharge he is on an antibiotic ointment for 7 days.

Just wanted to see how other babies have overcome this. I'm hoping it clears up on its own without needing anymore medical intervention (today the discharge isn't as bad so that's a good sign).

Thanks ladies!

Re: Clogged tear ducts

  • My son had this at about the same age.  His pediatrician told me to hold a warm compress to his eye several times a day until it cleared up.  It took a couple of days, though she did say it could take up to a month.  No medications used.

  • Another option, which worked well for DD, is to put some breastmilk on the eye as well.  Not sure why it works, but it does.

  • My LO had trouble with this. Found a youtube video that said to take your pinky finger, and while they are asleep massage the tear duct to stimulate it. Worked great and no more gunkies.

This, as well a drop of breast milk in the eye. Doing this combo got rid of my LO's block in a couple days (she had the block for about 6 weeks before I heard about these remedies).

  • Breastmilk and massage
  • Fantastic! I was just about to ask this question...starting these remedies immediately!!
  • My LO had the same thing starting right at birth. At her 4 week appt the pedi prescribed antibiotic drops, 2x day for a week. He said if it didnt clear after that, then it was truly a clogged tear duct and not conjunctivitis. However, her eye cleared after only 2 days of drops and hasn't had a problem since. We never had to massage it.

  • DD has this also on her right side.
From what I read on Google wiping it with a warm rag and massaging the inner corner of her eye helps to unclog it.
Of course when we went to the pedi it was perfectly fine but later that night it was crusty again.
Its much better when I do this two or three times a day.

I didn't think the breastmilk thing was true. I'll be doing this next feed.
  • DD2 had a clogged tear duct that got infected at about 10 days old. She needed eye drops for the infection, and warm, wet washcloth and massages helped clear up the clog, but it continued to be clogged on and off until she was about 4-6 months old, when she outgrew it.

  • Our son had clogged tear ducts and our doctor told us to massage the area below his eye firmly.  The left eye cleared up almost immediately but it took two months of constant massages that he didn't like to get the right eye clear.
  • We took our LO in around the same time your LO is due to the same thing. DH was really concerned that it was pink eye. The pedi said to just massage the duct, rubbing your pinky down from top to bottom for a few minutes every few hours or so to help to duct loosen, and that it should help. He said if it seemed to get really bad, then we should come back to see if it was more than just a clog. We did that for a few days and it really helped her out. no meds, or anything.

  • At 2 weeks our pedi prescribed an ointment and that helped a ton. It was cleared up within 3 days.

  • Another vote for breastmilk. Just a drop or two on your clean finger and use that to massage the inner corner of LO's eye. Cleared up in 2 days!
  • DD1 had this. The one pedi we saw sent us home with antibiotics, but as soon as I got ahold of my pedi I quit them. She said to massage with a warm compress. It did the job.
