I've read that we're not supposed to eat eggs that aren't fully cooked. But I also had a girlfriend who ate everything under the sun with her last pregnancy including eggs benedict and her daughter is health. If you're comfortable with it and you know the restaurant/brand of eggs, go for it. But if you hesitate, then you may already have your answer.
this is a tough one...I was recently talking to one of my coworkers who just had her third baby, and i was telling her how i was craving my favorite Red Robin burger but wouldnt have it because its topped with an over medium fried egg and she thought i was being silly. As offended at her less than tactful attitude towards MY decision to take precautions about what risks i would and wouldnt expose my baby to, i brushed it off. Shes had three healthy babies, so obviously whatever precautions she did and did not take have worked for her. and whatever precautions i choose to take, will (god willing) or will not work for me. On the other hand, I have enjoyed two italian subs in the past two months ive known i was pregnant. I wouldnt risk eating one regularly, but its a craving ive given into a couple of times, and probably will a few more times before i give birth. So all in all, do what feels right to YOU. you may not have a baby in your arms yet, but you already have your maternal instincts. And while we all know that two margaritas every day while you smoke a pack of cigarettes will undisputedly be BAD for your child, things like over medium eggs and deli meat in moderation are so case-by-case that its hard to really have a black and white answer.
good luck and if you choose to eat your eggs, ENJOY!
I've heard you can buy pasteurized eggs and then cook them over easy or medium, but I have no idea where to actually find these eggs. Anyone?
Pretty much all eggs you find in a typical grocery store have to be pasteurized. It will say it on the carton. The only way they wouldn't be if you got them from a local farm or something that doesn't pasteurize the eggs.
I would say they are fine because they are heated even if not cooked all the way through. Also salmonella while not pleasant for mom doesn't cross the placenta or harm a fetus besides the dangers of making the mother sick. And your chance of salmonella doesn't increase because you're pregnant. It's not like listeria where it can cause miscarriage. Listeria actually can infect the fetus, salmonella cannot.

I eat runny eggs frequently. We buy free range eggs from local farms that abstain from hormones and antibiotics and use only vegetarian feed. My understanding is that these conditions protect the chickens from the strains of salmonella that are more prominent in factory farms. Even so, I've been eating oozy eggs my whole life from a variety of sources, and never had a food-borne illness. But, I have also had sushi (flash-frozen) and soft cheeses a few times, so I am clearly in the naughty camp on the food issues. The only things I have totally abstained from are caffeine, alcohol, and low-temp red meats.
I'm convinced that TheBump is having a posthumous feud with Steve Jobs and you can't post siggys from Macs.
