Buying stuff off craigslist...

I found a new My Brest Friend twin nursing pillow on Craigslist for $40. Did any of you get used or "new" stuff off craigslist for your twins?

I'm also trying to find a new boppy pillow, since we have one from DD. Maybe another bouncer? Rock n plays?

Re: Buying stuff off craigslist...

  • Not from Craigslist, but from consignment. I got a My Brest Friend Pillow, swing, bumbo, bouncer seat, 2 RNPs, and a DSNG stroller all for less than $200 and in rand new condition.

  • My stresses about CL are way more to do with immediate safety (i.e. not knowing the person on the other end of the computer) than the sanitation. I do consignment/thrift shops without any problem - clothes go through hot sanitation cycle before wear, toys get the bleach bath before play, etc... but after all the news stories about people being attacked/killed/kidnapped/etc after meeting people from CL, the last thing I want to do is let one of them know that I've got two baby boys and let them see the vehicle I drive or potentially have someone follow me home...

  • I do Craigslist but I usually have them meet up with my husband in the busy downtown area by his work, or we go together and one of us stays in the van with the kids. I wouldn't go by myself.

  • I am all about buying uses and CL stuff... If it can be washed. Something hard surface or machine washable? Sure. A sofa? Ehh probably not. It's just my own paranoia though I guess. And of course always take someone with you or meet in a public place if possible!

  • I am also fine with buying stuff off CL and have actually scored quite a bit of stuff for my twins (boppys, swing, bouncers, high chairs, baby clothes) and a few lots of maternity clothes. I wash everything as soon as I get it home and if there will be more than one load, I keep the additional loads in the garage until there is room to wash them.

  • I bought their dresser on craigslist. I bought a my breast friend at a yard sale that was listed on craigslist. Their clothes have mostly come from a multiples resale page on Facebook and I hope to finish up my baby needs at a resale held by the local multiples group. If it can be washed, it's fine to buy used. Bring a friend if it feels unsafe.

  • My craigslist purchases:  My Brest Friend twin pillow, two Boppy pillows, a Bumbo, two Best Chairs gliders, and both my older son's crib and the cribs in the new nursery.  I also have a couple of Infant to Toddler Rockers, a Snugabunny swing, and a huge assortment of toys that I've picked up at the local children's resale shops.

  • Thanks ladies. The lady I've been talking to for the My Brest Friend Twin pillow just had a c-section so I'm going to meet up with her next weekend. I asked if she just delivered twins and she said no, she accidently ordered the twin. So its brand new in the package. Score. I NEVER have people come to my house and I meet them in public places.

I'm currently selling DDs travel system, highchair and the free mattress that came with the new crib we ordered.

BUT, I hate the SPAM that comes with selling on Craigslist.

  • I'm making great use of our local shop. It's a spin on the usual consignment/thrift shop - you bring in donations, and they give you 40% of whatever they price it at, in store credit. I brought in $28 worth of clothes from the boys last week, came away with $11 in credit - which I turned around and used to get some jeans and Ts for the boys :) I don't have to wait around and see if the stuff I brought in sells or not, and I'm getting something back instead of just a tax write off for donating.

The other great part is that they have a standard pricing model for most of the clothing - all jeans are $3.99, all normal cottons sleepers are $2.99, graphic/fancy Ts are $2.99, etc. So I always know what to expect to get when I bring in clothes. The stuff like swings and changing tables and things varies a lot more on brand and condition. I finally figured out how to best play the game, tho - when I get clothes for the boys from there, I stick to bigger brands like OshKosh and GAP - I don't care about my boys having labels on their butts, however, I've found that when the store is running out of room, they're more likely to accept the name brands than they are to accept the store brands - and since they price them for exactly the same amount, I'm getting quality and increasing the likelihood of being able to bring it back for credit later :)

To top it off, they have their own laundry room on site and wash everything before tagging it!

I swear, every town needs a shop like that.

I'm glad the MBF pillow is in brand new shape :) Should get a lot of good use out of it. I'm waiting to see if anyone I know personally needs mine before I take it down to the shop for credit.

  • I stopped using CL.  We have a ton of local tag sale pages on FB.  It's awesome because you get to "see" the person on the other end.  Also don't forget about the Moms of Multiples Resale page on FB.

  • I have bought and sold a ton of stuff off CL. I don't invite people to my house, but am often a little surprised how much info people give me (I will be home alone with the kids so stop by at ...) With that said, since I am not an axe murderer I don't think too much about it. I also sanitize anything like that so am not too worried about bugs or whatnot. And new in package is a total score! I got my nursing pillow new as well from a twin mom who had preemies and bf just didn't work out for them so she never used it.

  • I bought my twin nursing pillow, jumperoos and some other stuff at my local MoMs club sale. I have bought some stuff off of CL but it was always stuff that was really easy to sanitize.

I do this more now too. I do like it better than CL; a lot more comfortable for me! Though recently I had 3 major items I need to sell before we move. They'd been on my FB sale page for weeks with no nibbles. I put them on CL and all sold within 3 days.
