vaccination article

This was posted by a friend on my FB. I've never thought about vaccines this way before.

Not trying to stir up trouble. Just an interesting little article that made me think a little differently about vaccines.

  • So many people don't understand the concept of herd immunity.  If someone chooses to not vaccinate their child, they are relying on the rest of the country TO vaccinate their children so their unvaccinated child won't be exposed.

This exactly. That's a great article, thanks for sharing!

  • Great article!  There was a poster on her a few weeks ago who said she is not vaccinating her LO for polio because there hasn't been a polio outbreak in decades.  I tried to explain to her that the reason why we don't see polio anymore is because we vaccinate for it!  She didn't get it though :(  I've come to realize that vaccines are my soap box issue and I have no respect for people who don't vaccinate their kids (unless there is a medical reason not to).  We are lucky that we live in a time and place where we don't know the dangers of the diseases we vaccinate for.

The polio rates decreased dramatically prior to the vaccine being introduced. I chose not to vaccinate because the diseases that they vaccinate for are rare but the leukemia, childhood cancer rates, allergies, asthma, etc are higher than ever before and there are carcinogens in vaccine ingredients. I never thought I wouldn't vaccinate and I may vaccinate when LO gets older but not doing it right now. I don't judge mothers - at the end of the day we do what we feel is best for our children...

Pertussis is rare? Meningitis is rare? Pneumonia is rare? Try again. I hope you're not trying to say that immunizations are causing increased rates of cancer, asthma, and allergies?

And where is the research linking any of those diseases to vaccines?

  • There is no scientific evidence supporting the notion that vaccines are the cause of ANY serious conditions for those who are not allergic. "Well at least he doesn't have asthma." is little consolation when you are watching your child suffer (and possibly die) from a disease against which you could have vaccinated, like pertussis. We have had pertussis outbreaks all over this country. It's just not worth the risk of skipping the vaccine. I vaccinate my children for both their health and for herd immunity.

  • I'm vaccinated and I don't have cancer, asthma or allergies. Neither do my parents, or brothers. I don't think that vaccinations cause those things. I am more concerned about carcinogens in plastics and pesticides put on food than I am about a vaccine that's been around for years and years.

  • The point of vaccinations is that they should protect the body from contracting the disease and/or getting the side effects from the disease. So if my child is vaccinated and another child is not, my child should not get sick if she contracts the disease from an unvaccinated child.

  • Moo... I vaccinate because that's what our health and wellness professionals told us we should do. I have never considered not vaccinating. DH's grandpa had polio as a kid and his legs were affected. I don't want that for my children if there is any way to avoid it. An ounce of prevention, you know.

I am not trying to stir up the debate any further, but I am asking because I am genuinely interested. As a parent who isn't going to vaccinate or might delay vaccinations, what does your pediatrician think? I am only asking because the pediatrician my daughter goes to strongly urges parents who won't vaccinate to find another
pediatrician practice altogether. I was curious how easy it is to find a doctor who was ok with not vaccinating since most follow the American Academy of Pediatrics vaccine schedule.

ONE- your going to stir up a debate because many of us feel VERY strongly about vaccinating our children.

TWO- good luck finding a pediatrician practice that will be OK with you not vaccinating, most follow the American academy of Pediatrics schedule for a reason, because it's the right thing to do. I understand you might delay also, but I strongly trust my pedi to give me advice what's best for my child.

    Anniversary

  • I'm not saying that I am not vaccinating! I am and did!!

I was responding to another poster that said she wasn't going to vaccinate.
  • We've had a few outbreaks of tb around here. It makes me so mad that these people have access to vaccines and can probably afford them but instead choose the risk it approach and infect others.

I didn't vaccinate at 2 months and expressed my concerns about the ingredients to my pediatrician. I had to sign a waiver. She told me to read some literature from the CDC website, which I already read but she didn't push it too much. I am not sure whether I will just delay vaccinations by a few months or choose which vaccinations to get.

I'm just curious why you would choose to delay vaccinations? If you plan to get them done...why not get them doneat the recommend age?

Right?! My little brother has cancer, and he was vaccinated. Your logic is terribly flawed. I'm vaccinating.

If you don't vaccinate, your Pediatrician thinks you're an idiot, even if he/she doesn't come right out and say it to your face. I'm a Pedi, so I know this for a fact because I think people who don't vaccinate are idiots. Flame away, although I think those who would flame are in the minority on this board. Unfortunately, my practice won't allow me to kick patients out of my practice for not vaccinating.
  • My two cents about vaccinations: when I was a kid, I contracted mumps from another kid in my town who had not been vaccinated (I did have the vaccine). Anyway, I got sick and it sucked, but the kid that had no vaccine became a lot sicker than me. I was in the hospital for one day and then recovered at home for a week- he was in the hospital almost a month. I remember how terrible the mild symptoms of that were and I couldn't imagine exposing my son to that disease with no protection. Of course, B is vaccinated- not just for him, but for all his future friends too.

Yeah, our pediatricians office kicks you out if you won't vaccinate. We vaccinated so its not an issue, but I was curious what pediatricians office would be accepting of those non-vacc parents. They have to go somewhere!!

That other poster was talking about not vaccinating so I was curious what her experience was.

No flaming from me! I agree with you entirely!

Wait, seriously?  The diseases we vaccinate against are rare BECAUSE there are vaccines for them.  And any carcinogenic chemical used in vaccine is used in extraordinarily negligible quantities and could not cause cancer.

  • You can flame me but I will judge someone for not vaccinating their children. It doesn't just affect your child but others as well. Right now in the 4 major counties around where I live, there have been 11 (last I heard a few more popped up) cases of measles. Before this year there were like 8 cases over 5 years or so. And when talking about it they mention that this "unvaccinated child contracted the disease" or this "unvaccinated adult" and now there's an outbreak. That makes me scared to take LO out around others because she's too young to have that vaccine. It's pure ignorance to not vaccinate if you ask me. I read a really good article in our Drs office the last time I was there, I wish I remembered what it was. I'll have to look next time we are there. It just talked about how not vaccinating puts others at risk for diseases we shouldn't be at risk for anymore.

This. DS got Pertussis as a baby before we were able to get the whole round of vaccinations and I was pissed. I, and all of my family members, got the TDAP in order to keep DS healthy but unfortunately he must have come in contact with someone without the vaccine. Sitting in a hospital watching your baby vomit from coughing so hard is NOT fun. And as a parent I did everything I could to prevent DS from getting it. It really is frustrating.
