Changing Industries

I am about to apply for a new job doing the same work I have been doing for 15+ years but in a different industry - going from the corporate IT consulting world to an academic community.  I meet all the requirements for this job with the exception of not having done the work in a public education system.  The application process requires you to submit a letter of interest (in addition to a resume).  In the letter, would you make reference to the fact that you are changing industries and try to preemptively deal with that issue, or would you just focus on the skills/experience that are a match for the job?  My instinct says don't call it out and hope they give more weight to my other experience/skills that are a fit for the job, but I'm not sure if there is a way to deal with this issue in a positive way?

Haven't applied for a new job in 13 years so I'm a little rusty on this stuff! TIA for any advice!

Re: Changing Industries

  • I would reference the change in industry and highlight your skills how it relates to both industries. GL!

  • Public education systems tend to be tightly knit communities ripe with nepotism and favoritism. Therefore I would definitely not only address your change of imdustries, but find some way to spin it to show how your outside experience makes you an even better candidAte than the next guy!
  • I just did this where I worked in sales in one industry (Pharma) and changed to another (Technical Science). I would only speak to your skills that apply. You can have that in depth discussion when you are face to face. P.S. I got the job so it is possible :-)
