Trying to Get Pregnant

How long after BC did you get pregnant?

I have recently come off BC and I plan on waiting at least 3 months before TTC. I don't know if there is any correlation, but I have witnessed a lot of miscarriages of women who have just come off BC. That worries me. Anyways, I'm just wondering how long everyone waited after BC before trying or getting pregnant?

Re: How long after BC did you get pregnant?

  • Some folks start trying right away. Others wait a cycle or two.

I think it depends on the individual's comfort level and the type of BC they were on.

What did your doctor recommend? I'd follow his/her instructions. :)

Off bc in January, started trying in May. Had 28 day cycles until July when I had a 58 day cycle... My Dr. Believes that my body is still adjusting to being off BC after being on it for ten years.

This is a trying to get pregnant board. Most posters here are not pregnant. I've currently been of birth control since August of 2012. I've been TTC since the end of March.... And I'm not pregnant yet.

    Sooooo... I dunno.

Eta: misread the body of the post. Fail.
  • I'm getting my implanon pulled out next week. Fertility should return to normal.
  • 1/4 pregnancies end in miscarriage. That's your correlation. They're common.
This. The stats aren't any higher for women just off BCP. Those just happen to be the ones you remember hearing about, especially now that you're searching for scenarios that could apply to you.

You can wait as long as you like, but there's no need to.

PPs, though you're right that there would be lots of great answers on 1st tri to the "how long did it take you after coming off BC" question, please don't forget that there are lots of ladies here who are TFAS. ;) We might just have some insight to share too.

The real answer is that everyone is different. Some people may get pregnant right after stopping, and others may take a while to regulate. The experience of one Internet stranger does not imply that her experience will be similar.

  • I started trying right away after stopping BC at the start of August 2012.

  • With DD, I had been off of BC for years before TTC. It took seven cycles to get pregnant... After years of my body being free of BC. I'm not sure it really matters, tbh. I never went back on BC after Dd three years ago - basically doing NFP, and this is cycle two so far.

Of course! You're absolutely right. It just annoys me when I see the frequent response "this board is for people who are TTGP, so how would we know?!" My point is just that there are lots of ladies on TTC who have been pregnant. ;)
    I've been pregnant before, twice.

  • Never been knocked up, so may not be much help. But I did just come off BC after a decade on it. I'm on cycle 4 and I think there are still some things that need to return to normal. I ovulated right away, but my LP's are 9-10 days, and pretty scant in the CM department. I heard hormonal BC can jack up the things that make CM though. Also heard its common for LP's to be short. I'm hoping mine will get back to normal here in a few months! I am taking FertilAid though, as I've heard it can help your hormones get back in balance!

Her title may have implied she was wondering how long it took people to get pregnant after BC but her actual post asks how long people waited before trying. Why would this board not be suitable for that question? OP sorry I don't have any insight for you as I was off BC for years before we started TTC.
  • People should read before they snark attack.
  • Sorry for all the confusion! In my opinion, if you don't like my post just skip over it!  ;) Thanks for all the helpful posts! Good luck everyone!

Sure, it is true that there are many women here who have been pregnant.  However, the concentration of pregnant women on the 1st tri is 'logically' closer to 100%, whereas the concentration of pregnant women on TTGP is 'logically' closer to 0%.  In this case, the OP did ask how long did you wait before TTC or becoming pregnant but it seems PPs were not sure how helpful/relevant the answers will be to her particular question if they are not pregnant.

If she cares about more responses based on actual pregnancies after BC, and not just how long anyone waited to start TTC, then it would be a logical question to ALSO ask on 1st tri.

To the OP, I have been off hormonal BC for approximately 11 years.  I waited 9 years before NTNP and 10 years before TTC. @byegurlbye had the answer - there is not a scientific correlation to post-BC conception ending in more frequent MC.  Wait if it makes you more comfortable, but there is no scientific reason to do so.

Nope. This board is hella more active than 1st Tri. OP would get replies but not as many because participation is lower over there kwim?

I'm picking up what you're laying down. But that's why I said It would be a logical question to  ALSO post over there since there are more currently pregnant ladies over there - the activity of the board is another legitimate point to consider.

Now that you mention it, though, I have lurked a bit lately over on 1st Tri and I have to say - it kind of makes me worry for the future, so I will concede she's may get more intelligent answers over here.

  • I was on it for 6 years, it took 11 months to conceive DD.   We started trying right away.  I had "regular" cycles and well timed sex during that time.  Sometimes it just takes a while.
  • With DD, it took four months from when I went off BC until I got pregnant. So far I've been off BC almost two months and I'm not pregnant yet, so we'll see!

This exactly for me. We began trying immediately after coming off the pill. When to start depends on when you want to. If you want to give your body a chance to regulate coming off the pill, then do so. I agree with what byegurlbye said, there's no proof of correlation between coming off the pill & m/c.

  • Many pregnancies end in miscarriage. I've never heard that the chance is increased after coming off of birth control.

I stopped taking birth control in March, and we started trying right away. I got pregnant after 4 cycles (ended in m/c, but that was not because of the birth control).
