Rough week

I'm ready to be done with this week. We all had strep throat, DS and H are still sick (we think with some kind of virus on top of the strep b/c they are already on antibiotics). And worst of all my mom had a stroke on Tuesday. She's in decent shape. She was in public and just a few blocks from a hospital so they got her care fast. She does have some damage; she's having trouble with her right side and her language and memory are scrambled (she knows people and stuff just not words - if that makes sense). There are glimmers of hope for a full recovery but it'll just take time.

She is being discharged from the hospital now so that's really encouraging. She's lucid and coherent but without being able to communicate well she's getting really frustrated. It's just really hard seeing my mom not being her usual bright self.

Oh geeze! That sounds like an awful week. I hope your mom keeps improving and recovers quickly. And for all of you to be sick on top of that - yuck!

Hopefully everyone is able to get some rest this weekend.

I'm so sorry! My FIL suffered a stroke in January and had the same symptoms you're describing. He's made a 95% recovery so far! Hope you're all feeling better soon!

oh no! so sorry to hear all of this! hope your family DH and DS feel better soon and glad you are mending from the strep.

hope this is not to nosey...but are they giving your mom speech therapy? i used to work with patients who had strokes, and recovery was usually FANTASTIC if they got regular speech therapy starting ASAP. sounds like cognitively she is doing well, but is having some aphasia. also, they can set her up with a communication system (like pictures or whatever) to use until she gets the language worked out.

Oh man, I'm sorry about your mom. Strokes are scary. My uncle had one about 2 years ago and he's basically back to normal now. I hope she makes a full, speedy recovery!

Oh goodness, I'm so sorry to hear about your mom! Prayers that she's able to make a full recovery. It's a great sign she's getting out so quickly already. Hope the rest of your family is recovered for the weekend and it can be relaxing for all.

She is getting speech therapy. Her speech is clear she mostly just can't find the right words. Like they ask "what's this?" with a watch and she gets that but will struggle with the parts; like band, or face. Sometimes she nails it then the next time can't get one part.
Every now and then a word comes out as a jumble.
She doesn't have any real facial paralysis (a bit of droop on the right though) so she's not slurring at least.

Oh wow! Sorry emo! I'm glad your mom is getting therapy. Strokes are scary, I hope she makes a good recovery. Stinks that when it rains it pours I hope your household is feeling better soon too.

so great that she's getting therapy and that her cognition is good. its really incredible how the brain can heal.

What a week indeed! I hope everyone is healthy again. And huge empathy regarding your mom. I'm sure it's very frustrating not to be able to communicate...and equally agonizing to watch her struggle. Grace & peace to you all.

Huge hugs lady! That does sound like a rough week. Glad your family is on the mend and that your mom seems to be pulling through. Recovery can be a long and trying road. Prayers that your mom gets back to 100% soon.

Ugh. Need more T&P. she's back in the hospital with an infection at one of the blood draw/IV spots. And they found another clot while u/s the infection.

Thanks ladies - this was actually from a few months ago (some random person bumped it).
As an update my mom is doing great. She's cleared from speech and physical therapy. She gets tired easily, but that has a lot to do with her meds, she has a slight limp and has some trouble with the right side, and she will still stutter or forget easy words, but she's really amazing. She's the poster child for what fast action for a stroke can do.
