Babies: 3 - 6 Months

When to start solid foods

I went to my lo's 4 month check up today and my Dr said she can start eating small amounts on cereal an purred fruits and veggies. She is 15 lbs 12.5 oz. I have read a lot of places not to feed baby anything but bm or formula until 6 months. But my Dr says its ok to start now. Confused???

New Mommy!!!

Re: When to start solid foods

  • I started at 4 months.. I think it's a personal decision.. You can find things supporting either one..

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • 6 months is the current rec. We waited till 6 months with DS1. With DS2 we may start slightly earlier (but not much, like 5.5 months) just because he is sitting unassisted, looks ready, etc.
  • We took cues from James. When he started interacting at the table he started taking solids well. We tried before that and he hated it. Day care actually recommended we try again because at lunch time he was going for the other babies' food. He gets 1 to 2 tbsp of rice cereal at lunch and 1-2 tbsp of stage 1 gerber at dinner. So far he's had bananas and sweet potatoes.

  • I subscribe to the 'food for fun until 1'. Theory. I will be doing Baby Led Weaning. So no cereal or purées for my LO

  • Our pedi said 6 months and no earlier and then also told me to only do vegetables for the first month.  My mom told me the same thing, something about fruits being so sweet that if you introduce them first then LO will not take veggies?  Anyway, our pedi said the day DD turns 6 months I can start with yellow or orange veggies for the first 2 weeks, then every other veggie, then fruits at 7 months and proteins (meat/poultry/etc) at 8 months.  He also highly recommended making my own purees vs the pre-packaged.  When I went to the grocery store the other day I picked up a jar of some organic brand baby food and looked at the ingredients - it had a lot more than just the vegetable it was supposed to have!

I think you should do whats best for you and your LO, taking your pedi's recommendations into account.

  • We were going to wait until 6 months and do BLW, but she was showing so much interest that I made some purees and started this week (she'll be 5 months tomorrow), and she loves the banana and avocado we've tried so far.

  • The guideline is 6 months BUT a baby is considered ready when they can sit up unaided and start to show an interest in food and putting things in their mouth.

  • Our Dr. told us that at his weight he did not need to start food until 6 months (he is 23" long and 16.50 LB at 4 months).   BUT she did say if he is showing interest to let him taste things off our plate.  She also said he could not drink water out of a sippy cup.

I would highly suggest to go off not only your babies cues (our little one has been showing signs for a couple months so we have been giving him tiny tiny tastes of different things) but talk to your Dr.

I knew that I knew that I knew I would start him on food at 4 months no matter what but even before we went to the Dr. I knew he was not ready for food other than small tastes.

  • I'm in no rush...I figure my LO has the rest of her life to eat food. She is 5 mo 1 wk and I'm planning on starting at 6 months.
