Stay with original OB or go to Specialist?

Hi guys, new here. Just found out about our twins last week. A total shocker.
I really like my OB, and she has told me she has a lot of experience with twins, and very good recommendations, but should I ask to be switched to a specialist? I don't have any other risk factors, if it was a singleton I would be considered low risk. Her staff seems very capable and when I call to ask questions they always seem to know there is a big difference between twins and a single pregnancy, so I am not getting blown off or anything. So far I have been very pleased and wouldn't mind staying with her.

I have another appointment next week and am making a list of questions to ask her about her experience, and if she is unavailable will  get some other random OB or can I be sent to one of their MFM? Etc. Any thoughts would be great. I think I am panicking a little due to the surprise, and it just makes me feel better to have more knowledge.

TIA.

  • At the very least your OB should be sending you to an MFM for consultation throughout your pregnancy and work in conjunction.

I personally would rather see only one doctor is responsible for my care instead of 2 so I immediately switched to MFM/high risk OB.  There are enough doctor trips during a twin pregnancy that I didn't want to add on any more, and I feel safer with an MFM.

I too am normal risk aside from it being a twin pregnancy.  However, because it is a twin pregnancy, it is high risk and anything can happen at any time.

    Congrats and Good Luck!

  • I would ask about seeing a MFM in conjunction with your regular OB.

Luckily we just moved because my previous OB office was so passive about my twin pregnancy and by my 12 week appointment, I still hadn't even seen a doctor, just a nurse practitioner. They didn't even offer to do an ulatrasound when I had heavy bleeding at 12 weeks.

When I founf my new OB where we moved to, she automatically referred me to a MFM that I see once a month and I see my regular OB once a month. They are totaly on top on my care and I feel such relief with them.

  • I saw both my OB/GYN and a separate perinatologist group. After my initial u/s at 8w2d where we discovered that we were expecting twins, my OB still did all of the normal appointments but I had all of my remaining scans with the peri.

  • Congrats!!

I stayed with my original OB throughout my entire pregnancy.  I did go to an MFM for ultrasounds but my care and delivery was with my OB.  They were very knowledgeable about twins and took very good care of me and my boys.

  • I saw both my OB, who did my delivery, and a MFM who didn't do deliveries anyway.  They shared information and my OB consulted with the MFM to make a decision on delivering me early.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • My OB mentioned that I would start seeing a Peri anyway for monitoring starting at 20 weeks. I was referred earlier than that (i'm 12 weeks now and am now refered to the Peri/MFM) but I think it's fine to see both. You're not cheating on either of them by having both.

  • Great thanks guys, I will ask next week when I go about this. I like the idea of seeing both, best of both worlds. Plus I like having seen a doctor before an issue arises, hopefully it doesn't, but just in case.

  • Also keep in mind, depending on your region - an MFM may not offer the option to deliver. I see both an ob and MFM because where I live the MFMs cover so much territory there is no way they could deliver all the pregnancies they consult on. I like having both them and my ob.

I see both an OB and MFM. They pretty much have told me the OB is to look after my health and the MFM looks out for the babies. My OB just checks for heartbeats, pre-e, GD, etc just like a singleton pregnancy. MFM does an ultrasound and consultation every visit. I like seeing both because I feel like they are being very thorough.

Once I go into labor, I won't see my MFM anymore. They don't deliver or anything.
