Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Activities for Babies

We just recently went on a trip from NC to Seattle, DS's first plane trip. We did all kinds of stuff like sailing and exploring the city. We got so spoiled by how well DS was sleeping because he was getting so much activity each day.

Now we're home and he's not sleeping as well. Who knows of any good activities for young babies? We already take a baby swim class but it's only once a week. We can always go for a stroll in the park, but that's not much exercise for him. Other than lots of tummy time, I can't think of anything. :(

Re: Activities for Babies

  • I really like this website: https://www.funathomewithkids.com
Lots of stuff for older kids, but I've started doing some simple sensory activities with LO and it's been a nice change of pace (for me, at least!).

We've played with ice and water, dry pasta, the edible version of "cloud dough" (flour and veg oil), shaving cream + food coloring in a plastic bag, and cool whip.
Most of it gets eaten (or is attempted to be eaten) so you have to watch them like a hawk.

I've also been starting to rotate his toys, as we've been building up a bigger selection by borrowing from family and purchasing from garage sales. My SIL has 3 under 3 and she has a few different plastic bins filled with toys that she rotates in/out of storage every few days. I really like that idea, so I'm hoping to do the same eventually.

  • I was just reading recently in Parents magazine that going outside in the morning if the sun is out makes everyone, adults and kids sleep better.  So going for a morning walk would be good.  Taking him to the park and swinging with him.  What about the local library, does it have a story-time you could take him to?
  • Both of my kids love just getting out- Petsmart is a big hit. We can watch the fish in the tanks forever. The weather is finally getting bearable in the evenings so we can play outside again. DD rides her bike and I push DS in the Cozy Coupe car. I think the fresh air and change of scenery are good for all of us.

  • We try to get out every day. Monday we go to a mommy & me yoga class, Tuesday story time at the coffee shop, Wednesday we have no planned activities so usually go visit someone like my grandma or a friend or something, Thursday we take a music class and Friday we have a standing lunch/play date with babies in the neighborhood. She sleeps better when we get out of the house and I am a major extrovert so I go way less crazy when I get to spend time with other adults. :)
  • IMO it helps sleep when I leave the house.

    Our "leave the house" schedule:

    Monday-Grocery Shopping
Tuesday-DD goes to Gram's or tags along for errands
Wednesday-Story Time at Barnes & Noble
Thursday-DD goes to Gram's or we schedule a play date
    Friday- Park or Indoor Playground

  • Great suggestions everyone. Thanks!

@litgirl77 that's an awesome website! I bought stuff to do the pond environment thing since LO loves water!
