Say what?!?!

So yesterday I had a dr appt.  Everything went great!  The midwife asks if I have any questions or concerns....in fact I do....

Sorry if this is TMI, but I've been constipated since Saturday evening.  This is my first run-in with constipation so I brought it up and asked her how long is normal to be constipated.  She says 4-5 days.  Well it's now Thursday, and in the middle of the night last night my stomach was killing me and I had the urge to go.  I went to the bathroom, it felt like I had a BM......I was estatic!  When I looked after I was done, there was nothing in the toilet! ha. WTF?  So anyways, the midwife told me to take Colace, which I started to taking yesterday evening.  My question to everyone who isn't too embarrassed to share...how long have you gone without a BM, and have you taken Colace...and does it work?!   The midwife said that if this doesn't work in 2-3 days that i'll have to come in and they will have to have someone remove it!  She has got to be shittin' me (literally!)!   Please tell me the Colace will work soon and I won't have to go in to have it removed....

Happy Thursday!

Re: Say what?!?!

  • Colace doesn't make you go it just makes it easier to go. It's a stool softener.

  • Colace is a stool softener and can take up to a day or two to work. It's not a laxative to actually make you go. It does works though. I think they'd try a few things (colace, laxative, suppository, enema) before moving on to more invasive ways

  • I've had to do colace before.  Make sure you're drinking a lot of water though.  I have also done fiber gummies (chew 2 a day) and they work very well.  It was okay'd by my Dr to do both.  But again make sure you're drinking lots of water esp if you go the fiber gummy route bc they will make you more backed up if theres nothing to help fluch you out.

  • Definitely fiber and lots of water. I like the fiber gummies and Activia yogurt with probiotics. I had some really bad constipation in the first trimester and this keeps me regular now. Colace is hit or miss for me, but I probably wasn't drinking enough water at the time because I was vomiting constantly (so lovely).

  • Milk of magnesia works wonders. I had a rough time in first tri and that stuff always got me to go.
  • Drink a ton of water. The colace should help soften the stool in your colon making it easier to pass. I assume what the midwife meant about having someone remove it was that they would do an enema in the office. I hope that you are feeling better soon!

  • I don't take colace, but if I am feeling bound up I just eat a fiber one bar which are surprising good and that works like a charm, try eating some more fiber
  • I would also eat a bit of fiber! I know Apples, broccoli and coffee help me go when I need it.

  • If the colace doesn't work, you can try Miralax.  The Miralax is a laxative so it should get you going and then you can maintain with the Colace.  You may need to take the Colace daily or every other to stay on top of it.

  • In addition to the stuff everyone else is recommending, drinking a cup of strong coffee is a miracle for me.

  • When i first got pregnant I was constipated all the time. I just made sure to drink lots of water, ate a ton of fruit but it didn't seem to help. My dad suggested drinking a cup of coffee and sure enough it did the trick lol. About half way through I was in the bathroom I didn't even finish it, but some people's stomachs don't react to coffee that way.
  • If you have not gone in that long, when you do go, it will hurt. Please, please, please save your tush some pain and take an enema or at least use a glycerine suppository. If you do the enema, warm it a little in a water bath. (Get a 2-pack, you will have to get one before delivery anyways) Do not strain or you may end up with rectal fissures or a hemorrhoid. If you are aware of it being stuck, try squatting with your feet on the toilet seat. That position is the most easy on your colon. I haven't been constipated in a long time because I regularly drink a fiber supplement and my prenatals contain a stool softener, but this is because I have had problems with constipation since birth.

Be careful of putting fiber on your constipation after the 3rd day. Basically you are just backing it up with slick bulk of new waste. Maybe you should add the stool softener as part of your regimen until you have finished healing postpartum, or at least discuss that with your OB. Good luck and feel better!

  • Mirilax! It will make you go! Keep up with the max Colace and do one glass of Miralax and you will poop in no time.
