High-Risk Pregnancy

Funneling/Shortening Cervix

Hi Ladies!  I am new to this board, but I was wondering if anyone else had been diagnosed with a funneling cervix.  I am currently 29 weeks and was recently diagnosed with a funneling and shortened cervix; cervix is currently 2.1cm and I was put on bedrest.  If you've had this previously could you please tell me your story?  Did you make it to term?  Was labor shorter?  Thank you soo much in advance for your help!

Re: Funneling/Shortening Cervix

  • There are lots of ladies here with a short or incompetent cervix. My first son was born at 25 weeks due to what we now know was IC. I had an emergency cerclage placed just before 23 weeks during my current pregnancy when my cervix was funneling and measured 7mm. I've been on bed rest ever since and will be 35 weeks tomorrow.

I have the same thing and I have made it to 33 weeks so far. My cervix has been as low as 1.1 and I am dilated to a 3. I will be interested to see if it means a shorter labor in the end though. Good luck to you and welcome.

  • I had this with my first and he was born 2.5 hours after his due date. At 27 weeks my cervix was measuring 1.7cm with funneling. After procardia and bed rest it was 2.2cm. At 33 weeks I was dilated to 1cm and stayed that way until around 37-38 weeks. By the time I hit 40 weeks I was 4cm dilated. They broke my water and 4 hours later my son was delivered!

I had a baby girl 2 years later and had no issues. Now I'm pregnant with twin boys and my cervix was around 1cm at 26 weeks. I'm 29 weeks now and holding steady.

I hope you make it all the way!

With my first pregnancy, they discovered my cervix was 1.3 at 23 weeks.  I was placed on hospital bedrest, given Procardia, Terbutaline shots as needed, and I made it 35 weeks. My labor was quick and uneventful-it started at noon (when I felt my first contractions), water broke around 5 pm, and I delivered at 1 am that next morning.  I have a happy and healthy two-year old!

Now cooking my second child-my cervix was doing well until 23 weeks: I went from 3.1 cm to 0.6 cm with funneling.  Had an emergency cerclage placed, and am currently on bedrest at home.  Cervix is approx. 2-3 cm and am currently 26 1/2 weeks.  My doctors have not been too adamant about bedrest, but I know my body pretty well, and my uterus gets so irritable when I move around a lot, so it is off to bed I go.  I will probably be on bedrest until 36 weeks (when I get my cerclage removed).

With short cervix, you have to wrap your mind around and accept the uncertainty of delivery.  It can be today, or it can be around your due date.  Take one day at a time, and celebrate each day you keep your LO cooking!  I drew strength from reading the positive outcomes that many women  have had on these boards, and I draw strength now from knowing what worked for me with my last pregnancy.  Best of luck to you!

  • My cervix has been shortening and funneling since 22 weeks. I'm currently 26 weeks 5 days. It was 1.6, 1.3 now it's .5. Is been holding steady there for a week. I am on bed rest and on progesterone supplements and blood pressure medications (supposed to help stop contractions). I've read stories that women have a super short cervix and make it full term so that gives me hope that these girls will cook a while longer!!
  • I'm in the same category. I am 20 weeks and had an emergency cerclage placed at 19 for funneling and short cervix of 0.9mm. I'm also on progesterone and bedrest. So worried about my little guy. All of your success stories give me hope and positivity!!!
  • Thank you soo much ladies!  You've all made me feel much better that I am not the only one out there!  You girls are the best!
  • I'm sorry It is very scary to be going through. I was 80% effaced and 4 cm at 31 weeks I dont remember my length number. I held out 3 weeks ! GL!

  • I lost my son at 21wks because we didnt catch my incompetent cervix intime. this pregnancy i had a preventive cerclage at 14wks...

29wks with a cervix 2.1cm your in a better position then most of us bedrest ladies. I am 28wks today with a 1.8cm as of last week, I go tomorrow to get it rechecked hope its steady at that lengh but wouldn't surprise me if its shorten more. Cervix are stubborn. They will grab some lengh one week and totally drop another. My dr told me with my lengh woman have made it to term so imagine your lengh :-)

  • I'm thankful for this topic thread. I am 17 weeks and currently have a healthy cervix, but I'm at higher risk of IC because of a LEEP in 2004 and cold knife cone biopsy in 2006. I am trying to stay positive but am SO nervous and paranoid. I don't want anything to grow wrong!! I have an anatomy scan next week at the beginning of 18 weeks where they'll check my cervix length as well, then not another until around 21 weeks in the beginning of October. I feel like I want to be checked more often for reassurance, but the doctor keeps telling me that there's nothing we can do but wait. For those of you who do have a shortening cervix, how often were you monitored until you found out? Positive stories of hope and success are much appreciated. Thank you!
  • I was diagnosed with a short cervix at 19 weeks.  My cervix thinned all the way down to 3mm, and then at my last ultrasound at 32 weeks it was 4cm.  I don't know how it could shorten so much and then completely thicken again, but it did.  And now I'm at term, and still waiting for her to make her debut.  You are much further along than I was, so things look good for you.  Good luck.

  • Congratulations! Thank you for the encouragement.
  • Lurking and thought I would share my story. My DS is 8 months now. At 20 weeks pregnant I was dx with IC. Funneled cervix and shortened to 1.5. 80% effaced. I had an emergent cerclage placed and was put on bed rest. At 33 weeks I stayed over night in L&D for contractions and some excessive discharge. At 35 weeks my water broke at home, no other signs of labor, and I was dilated to 2cm with my cerclage in. Went strait to 4cm after they removed my stitches and delivered my son 10 hours later. A total of 14 hours of labor after my water broke. My dilation slowed down after I got the epidural and I pushed for 2 hours. Just want to wish you luck and hope you carry to term or get as close as you can. My 35weeker had minimal complications, weighed a little over 5 lbs but is a chunky boy now!

I am currently 20 weeks pregnant and have a cerclage planned this week for a shortened cervix and funneling.  My first born came at 27 weeks.  I am so thankful to have read your post, it really gave me hope.  Congrats on your blessings!
