Umbilical Hernia

Hi J13 Mommas!

Anyone else's LO have an umbilical hernia after their baby's umbilical cord fell off?

My DD has a pretty substantial one, but our pedi doesn't seem concerned and said typically they resolve on their own, but  he did say that if it doesn't go away by age 3 or 5 yrs, then she would need surgery to fix it.

Both of my Grandma's told me that they had babies with umbilical hernias and they did the Old Wive's Tale, of taping a silver dollar to it... and both of them said it worked for each of their babies who had the umb. hernias.  Now, I'm not one to believe in old wive's tales, but I'm half tempted to try it.  Ok, maybe not with a silver dollar (who has those laying around these days?, lol!)... but maybe I'll try it with a quarter and some medical tape.  Can't hurt, right?

BTDT Mommas, what have your experiences been with umbilical hernias in the past? Did they resolve?  How long did it take?  Did your LO have to have surgery?

No experience, but I noticed today that LO may have an inguinal hernia.

As far as the OWT, I say go for it. I don't really believe in them, but that one will not harm your LO.

My LO has a pretty substantial one as well (he had very bad gas due to reflux which caused it) my pedi also said no worries, it should go away.

I have one from birth. It's never been a problem and was very small and unnoticeable until I got pregnant. During pregnancy it got bigger but wasn't a problem since lo blocked the hole. I may have to have it repaired now. I'm just saying not too worry too much.

My LO has a pretty substantial one as well & ped is also not very concerned. My DS had a hydrocele and it resolved on it's own.

Our pedi told us yesterday that DD has one and just to keep an eye on it. My mom suggested to use a binder on her which of course they don't have for babies any more like they did back then but fortunately she knows how to make one. My DH has had one his whole life and he's never had any problems with it, other than it pops out a little after he eats...

My baby has one, and the pedi said not to worry. She said they usually resolve on their own. If not, she sends the LOs to a specialist for evaluation. In her 18 years of practice she has only had 3 patients who needed surgery for it.

My LO has one. She got it about two weeks ago, and it's growing. Ugh. Wanted to tell you I asked the doc about taping down the belly button (which is what my grandmother told me they did) and he said it causes nickel allergies and metal allergies for young ones. I'm not sure, but man is love it if this thing went away!

DD had one and it resolved before she was a year.  DH also had one that he eventually had to have surgery on when he was about 12 I believe.  Either way it's no biggie.

Thanks Hilaboo, good to know!  I haven't tried the taping thing yet anyway.
