Ditching swaddle & nap question...

Tell me about ditching your swaddle? How did it go? How old was LO? How many nights did it take for sleeping to get back to normal?

I have 3 month old twins, I think it's time to end swaddling.

Also, how did you get LO to nap in their crib? We sleep at night in our cribs, but naps are wherever. How did you transition to the crib for naps. Do you have a schedule or just wing it? Did/do you swaddle during naps as well?

Re: Ditching swaddle & nap question...

  • I stopped swaddling DD completely at about 3 1/2 months because it was just too hot. She was only ever swaddled at bed time and never with her arms in. She also naps wherever she happens to poop out (unless it's in the car seat) and only sleeps in her crib at night. I don't plan to make her nap in her crib but now that she's rolling over she will be napping in her PnP more often. She has always been a very easy baby and transitions with minimal fuss (knock on wood!).

  • We stopped swaddling around 3.5 months when he was getting really close to rolling over back to belly. The first night he woke up 3x (but went back down easily), and after that he was totally fine and back to his normal self.

DS is a sucky napper whether he is in a crib or bouncer so I'm no help with that.
  • A week before DD turned 5 months we got rid of the swaddle (so last week). We swaddled for naps and night. I think it was more of a cue to her that is was time to sleep more than anything.

For 2.5 days we did one arm out and noticed no difference in sleep. Then we ditched it altogether and used a sleep sack instead. I guess she was ready.

For naps we have always used the crib but she rarely sleeps longer than 45 mins at a time. She is always down for her next nap no longer than 2 hours later (sometimes leas). It worked out to be 3-4 naps a day. We've been doing this since about 3 months or so (awake times being adjusted as needed).

We are now working on a 9ish nap, 12-1ish nap and a short late afternoon nap. Bed is always 7-8. We actually starting CIO with naps (and for bed if she doesnt fall alseep nursing) and she's asleep anywhere from 6-20 mins. She actuly doesn't even cry it's more just fussing and way easier than I thought it would be. I guess she is more adaptable than I thought! The last two weeks have been a big ones in our house!

  • My LO is 13 weeks old, a few nights ago we went from swaddle (he only gets swaddled at night, not naps) with no arms, he woke up once, and since then he sttn (as he was). I still have him in the swaddle without his arms, I have to wash the sleep sacks and the. I'll be using those.
He went down in the crib for a nap pretty easily. He usually falls asleep in his swing, but the few times I put him in the crib he was fine.
  • we got rid of the swaddle at 3.5 months. the first night he woke up 3-4 times.  since then he usually wakes up only once a night unless he is teething.  we use a sleep sack at night with pjs underneath.  he has always napped in his crib or in the baby carrier so i didn't have to transition to crib.  but he's not the best napper.  he usually naps for 45 minutes at a time and is only up for 90 minutes-2 hours between each nap.  he will nap way longer if i hold him when he wakes up from the first 45 minute cycle.  once this week he did a 2 1/2 nap during the day!  hoping it could be a new thing for him!

  • We quit swaddling at almost 4 months and he started rolling 2 days later. Night time sleeping is no problem but naps are hell. I'm not comfortable with him sleeping anywhere but his crib now that he's rolling and he fights it during the day. I think the light bothers him even with the shades down.
  • Thanks for your experiences. Sounds like it might just be fine.
Mine Do not seem to be ready to roll over, I might hold out a little longer.

    Thanks again.

  • If they still have the Moro reflex, it's not going to end well
