From an evolutionary anthropological perspective, new babies most often take after the father. Women know the babies are their genetic offspring (usually) but men have no such guarantee. So, men were historically more likely to stick around and support a baby if he thought it was his based on physical similarities.
I also remember reading somewhere that babies tend to look like the fathers right after birth because of what you said then they sometimes change their looks after they are older.
He is my husbands mini-me. Seriously I question if I contributed any genetics whatsoever. :-)
This! My MIL had the gall to actually say to me, "I don't think there's any of you in him at all." Ughh haha. But my friends call him mini-Ross (DH's name, obvi).
