Babies: 3 - 6 Months

sitting

I am curious, those without independant sitters, when you put the child into a seated position, how straight is the spine from a profile view? Does the child resemble a greater than or less than symbol or does LO look more like the letter C when supported only for balance?

Im trying to gauge how concerning ds2 posture is when he is in sitting position at 5.5 months.

Re: sitting

  • LO doesn't sit unsupported, but when assisted his back is straight. In the exersaucer he used to have that C shape, but now he archs his back the other way as if to counter balance... Not sure if that helps at all?

My siggy pic shows J when he was about 4.5 months (almost 5...). He was sitting for very brief periods independently, but still had that "C" curve to his spine. Now at 5 months, 1 week he sits straight up. It's amazing what they can do in just a few weeks!

ETA: Actually, looking at my siggy, the left pic in my siggy was 4.5 months, and the right pic was the day he turned 5 months. What a difference in a few weeks!

  • DD only sits for brief periods unsupported but she's fairly straight. She'll slump forward to grab a toy but then straightens back up. She's 23 weeks

  • mine is 5.5 months and still looks slump forward.  he doesn't sit independently at all.  in the exersaucer he stands up straight though.

  • 4 month old and a little bit of both.

    New Mommy!!!

  • My daughter is about 5.5 months.  She isn't sitting independently but she sits with her spine straight as a board...she just randomly flops over...forwards, back or sideways.

In the exersaucer she stands straight as well.

All that said, on the couch and elsewhere she can have horrible posture at times too!

  • Thanks.

I know we need to work on ds's trunk and neck strength at his next PT appointment but I was starting to worry that his body was extremely weaker than typical for his age since he just slumps down like he has no spine when placed in a seated position.  He does great with head control and the like when he's on his tummy but not so much yet when he's vertical.
