Nurseries and Baby Gear

How to decorate nursery if not your home

Hi ladies! I am currently 32 weeks 5 days pregnant and I have just started working on the nursery. So far my husband has built the crib and dresser. I've been trying to get a head start on things, but it's difficult because I haven't had my baby shower yet, and most of the nursery items (bed set, lamp, mobile, ect.) are on my registry. I have to wait to see if anyone will buy me them in order to begin decorating. Anyhooo, the issue with decorating how I want to decorate is that I don't live at my own house right now; I live with my in-laws because my husband and I are trying to save money to purchase our own home. We just got married last July. I've looked online and saw that a lot of the decorations need to be hung on the wall, like putting baby's name up on wall, which create holes in the wall for the nails. My in-laws did tell my husband and I that we can decorate the room as we would like, but I doubt they want us making holes in the wall to hang stuff. Is there anything else I can do to decorate the room. As of right now, it looks boring. I'm sure it will look better once I get/purchase the bedding and theme that goes with it, but I don't think it will look that nice because I can't really hang stuff, like shelves and what not. Thanks!

  • If you dont want to use holes, a lot of decor can be hung on walls with the 3m command hooks and other sticky gummy things. I had a house with wood panneling and instead of making holes, I used the stickeys on the back of pictures. They hold really well and removal is easy without damaging the walls.
  • We just bought the wall decals for my girls' room.  These shouldn't harm the wall and are fun decorations.  With my oldest we hung her quilt on the wall since they aren't supposed to use blankets due to SIDS risks.

  • Yup, lots of 3m strips.  Just be careful to only hang lighter objects- you don't want to risk a heavy frame/glass falling in the nursery.  We ended up doing LO's name in letters made of poster board instead of wood just to be on the safe side (it was also way cheaper).

Wall decals would also be a great option for you because they won't damage the walls and you can take them with you when you move.

We rent aren't allowed to paint or put holes in the wall. So, as others have said, we use the command hooks and the velcro thingies for picture frames (but we use extra, juuuust incase). Never had an issue with them (i.e. nothing has fallen) and they did come off very easily. I also have the the wall decals. With these tools, I honestly don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. I was able to achieve everything I would have wanted if we were able to paint and make holes. I'm really happy with how things have turned out.

  • I would use wall decals (try looking on etsy) you can find a lot of nice items and they are easy to remove.
