Working from home and childcare

edited August 2013 in Working Moms
I'm starting a new job working from home. The hours are flexible and can vary from 10 to 20 hrs per week. It is project based. I totally understand that it is nearly impossible to work from home without childcare. However i cannot justify having a sitter all day or having my lo in daycare when it may be a slow day and I would be able to watch LO myself. most days i can wait to work when dh comes home. Im still trying to figure out what to do if i receive a business phone call that i need to take during the day. I dont want my lo crying in the background. My question is how do I know which hours to hire a babysitter if my hours per day are inconsistent? What would you do?

  • how are your 10-20 hours set up? Seems to me the calls would only come in during the hours you've set or is it possible they'll come in at any time? If 10 is the minimum per week maybe get the sitter for a set 10 hrs and let ppl know that is the best time to call, otherwise to email& you'll follow up as soon as possible.
I think I would make sure your employer does not have an expectation that you will have child care during your work hours and I would get a sitter for at least 10 hrs a week.

  • Agree with PP. I think I would get a sitter from like 9-12pm every day...and then see if you can do calls or more work or whatever after DH gets home, whatever time that is.  Do you have family near by that you can call over with just an hour or 2 notice?
  • Any DC's around you have drop in care?
