U/S vs IRL Weights

Just wondering how much of a difference there CAN be between an ultrasound estimate of weights and what the babies actually weigh. I had an ultrasound today and my babes were estimated to be 5lb 3oz and 5lb 13oz. Im 34w tomorrow. This seems awfully big to me and I know that the ultrasounds can measure big or small. Just wanted to see if anyone had any info. Although, truth be told, I certainly feel like Im carrying two 5+ lb babies in there. Haha. TIA.

Re: U/S vs IRL Weights

  • The day mine were born they were estimated at 5#12 and 4#7. They were 6#8 and 5#3 at 35w4. Your babies could definitely be that size....or the u/s could definitely be off. LOL, such a wishy-washy answer....

P.S. Woohoo you are so close!! Hang in there....it is so tough toward the end!

  • I think they can be off by up to a lb, either way. At my MFM's office they usually say 2 lbs 8 oz, +/- 6 oz. As they get bigger and weigh more, the margin of error also grows. So at 20 weeks the margin may be 3 oz where it would be 1/2 lb or more at 30 weeks.

Okay, well then maybe I'm not crazy then.  This is my 3rd pregnancy so it's not crazy to think they could be bigger (since my uterus may have more room since it's BTDT).  No worries about a "wishy-washy" answer... it's kind of a hard question to answer.

Also, thanks for the words of encouragement!!  Seriously, it means a lot.  I'm really having a hard time lately.  My husband and I went shopping today and I had to cut my trip short and come home early to get off my feet and lay down.  I'm exhausted to the max!  Not much longer though and I know this so I'm going to hang on as long as these boys will...although they were SUPER low (the tech had a hard time getting measurements as it was and was unsuccessful at getting their head circumference measurement at all, which is what prompted the question) so I'm hoping to get another week or two out of them if they agree to it.  :-)

Ali, thanks for your input too.  It definitely makes sense that the bigger they get the more "off" the weights can be.  I'm hoping for 5+ lbers at birth but they will be what they will be.  :-)
  • My ultrasound at 35w est was that they were both 5lb11oz.

I had them 6d later and they were 5.10 and 5.13 so pretty spot on!

  • Wow, that was really close!!  :-)  Like I said, I certainly feel like there is 10+lbs of baby in there but of course am prepared that they may not be exactly as estimated.  :-)
  • mine were estimated to be 3.11, 4.3, and 4.11 a few days before they were born. they were born at 4.3, 4.10, and 4.10. so not TOO far off.

  • Ours u/s measurements were kind of off...I think the estimate was about 7lbs each a week before delivery (and they always measured within a few ounces).... when they were born at 37 weeks, DD was 8lbs and DS was 6lbs 9 oz.

You could definitely have big babies in there though!

  • Thanks ladies!  Your babies were all such good weights!!  I hope I can follow in your footsteps.  :-)
  • I had an ultrasound the morning I had them at 34 weeks 6 days and the ultrasound tech estimated they weighed 6lbs and 5lbs 14 ounces. I had the girls that afternoon and they weighed 5lbs 13 ounces and 5lbs 11 ounces so she was really close!
  • Thats really close too! I figure if I can squeeze another few days to a couple weeks we should have babies that are either pretty close to our estimates or even bigger, depending on how long they decide to stay put.
