Babies on the Brain

Genetic traits

I admit I'm a bit of a genetics nerd. When I was younger I dreamed of becoming a geneticist and went that direction in college for awhile. Now, I spend a lot if time day dreaming about what my future baby could look like. Problem is, I could throw just about anything lol.

I'm heterozygous dominant, (dark hair, brown eyes, just like my dad). My mom has red hair and hazel eyes, my brother is blonde with blue eyes. My husband is homozygous recessive (blonde hair, green eyes) just like his mother. And his new niece is a strawberry blonde, so he has the carrier for red as well. We both have straight, wavy, and curly hair in our families.

Really long story short: about all I can say about our future baby is they will be short and white, lol. What about you ladies? Any predictions for your own brood?

Re: Genetic traits

  • DD also inherited my family ears, which I am excited about. One with a rounded tip and the other with a pointed tip. She is the fourth one we know about who has them.

    That is so cute!

  • I have brown hair and hazel eyes, DH has brown hair, brown eyes.  Both of our kids have blonde hair and blue eyes.  My poor husband gets teased all the time by our families that they are the "Milk Man's" babies.

  • I'm an Irish/German/Native American with auburn/redhead and dark brown eyes. DH is mostly Italian with a little Irish and has brown hair and hazel/brown-ish eyes. DD has dark brown eyes and auburn hair like me but otherwise is the spitting image of my DH. Never in a million zillion years would have thought that. Genetics are strange :)

  • I have blonde hair and green eyes.

DH has blonde hair and blue eyes.

DS has blonde hair and green eyes but looks just like DH.

DD has blonde hair and blue eyes but looks just like me.

When DS was born, he had dark brown hair and DH and were both in shock since we're both blondes.  It all fell out when he was 6 weeks old and grew back light.

  • DH and I both have medium brown hair and green eyes, but had blonde hair and blue eyes until we were several years old. So far DS is following in our footsteps. It will be interesting to see which hand is dominant, as DH and I are both ambidextrous. It fascinates me seeing the physical features DS inherits from each side of the family

  • I also LOVE genetics - I got to do some pretty cool research when I was in university. My biggest worry is that the baby and I will be incompatible because my blood type is o- and my husband is a+

I keep bugging him to see what his parents/brothers blood types are to see if he is at least a carrier for a negative Rh factor lol

  • My dad has very strong fair skin, light hair and eyes genes. My mom is half Mexican half caucasian and is darker complected with hazel eyes and dark, curly hair. I took after my dad in every way: fair skin, green eyes, light brown, straight hair.

My husband is hispanic and I am caucasian. I was certain DD was going to come out with his dark skin and a head full of dark hair, but my strong fair genes took over and she's as light skinned as I am and has light-ish brown hair.

The funny part is that she is her daddy's mini me when he was a little boy. She also got his sides' curly hair, brown eyes, birth mark, and dimple. Her face is shaped like mine and I think we have a similar nose.

  • ohh interesting thread :) well the only thing I'm sure of is my kids will have blue eyes, as DH, myself and all our parents have them. I have blondish-brown hair and medium-fair skin, my mom has brown hair (she comes from a dark-skinned strain of Irish, tho her skin is not that tan) and my dad is a pasty redhead lol. DH has brown hair and more tan skin, his mom is blonde and his dad hasn't had hair in my memory lol, so not sure. we're all hoping my dad's red hair will prevail :)

EVERYONE in my mom's family has the same nose, which I also have. DH's family also has a reoccurring nose, which he does NOT have. I'd be willing to bet money on my nose! I'm thinking they'll get his ears tho. DH's older kid has his ears and eye shape (as well as color, blue) I'm guessing our kid will too. I wouldn't mind if they got his mouth and curly hair too! my mouth is too big (as is my mom's), his is much nicer IMO. my mom and I were both teased as kids for our big mouths (well and for talking too much, haha).

if DH and I are each 1/4 Irish, how much will our child be? I'm not good with fractions.
  • ahh thank you :)
  • DH has dark brown hair and blue eyes.  I have medium brown and brown eyes; however, I didn't end up with this current color until my late teens.  DS has blonde hair that keeps getting darker and hazel eyes.

You look at DH's pictures as a baby and you could almost think you are looking at DS--that is until he smiles; then his eyes get all squinty like mine and he looks like me.

  • Our DS is a little gobbly gook mixture of us and ever single grandparent. I see a little of all of us in his face. He did get my very fair skin, and DHs blue eyes. Was hoping he got my green, but his blue's are gorgeous. BUT ever inch of his body is an exact replica of DH. I mean he'll be in the tub and I'm just like "Hey Honey, if ever you wondered what you looked like from behind, there ya go."...lol.

  • Fun thread! I've got dark brown hair (curly) and brown eyes, DH has light brown hair (sort of wavy) and brown eyes. His hair was bleach blonde as a baby/toddler, though. DH is a slender and fit 6'4", I'm tiny at 5'3". Also, both of our fathers are fraternal twins. Currently trying for what will likely be our one and only, unless we end up with twins.

  • My parents were both Brown/Brown, as are my brother and I. My husband is Blonde/Blue. Our first child was Brown/Brown but our second was Blonde/Blue!
I was really excited from a genetics point of view because that means that both my parents and myself carried those recessive traits, which none of us knew until that little baby was born :)

  • Well, if you took a genetics course at the college level you should know that the generally given explanation of dominant and recessive traits is a vast over-simplification. Punnitt squares don't work in real life. Human genetics are so much more complex! There are millions of examples of two dark haired, dark eyed children having a blonde haired blue eyed child (without cheating!) or two dark skinned people having a very light baby. The odds are against it but you simply never know. :) Not to mention that with eye color there are far more than just green, blue, hazel, and brown - practically everyone has a unique combination.

As far as me and DH, we could end up with just about anything. :) Luckily, the outside isn't all that important in the long run.

Very true. There are a few things that will always be dominant, but blending and codominance can really mess matters up. This makes me think of the time my not-so-bright MIL expressed her confusion over a friend who had married a man from Africa. She asked "does that mean their baby will be black with blond hair?" Genetics... You're doing it wrong. -_- Also, red hair is a genetic mutation that can occur to anyone at any time. If you have a family history of it, it's very possible it will pop up but even if you do not, it very well may happen. This always makes me laugh when I watch Maury and men claim they are not the father because of that.

Believe me, I am completely aware of the fact that genetics is far more intricate then just dominant/recessive genes. But for the sake of posting on an Internet forum, I tried to keep it simple. ;)

In all reality tho, my DH and I have pretty even odds of throwing just about any combo, so it will be a complete surprise for us!
  • I'd say definitely short or average. Im 5'5" and DH is 5'10".
More than likely green or blue eyes as both sides of our family predominately have them.
And when it comes to hair, probably start out blonde and then turn brown. My DH was a toe head and I actually was born with a full head of dark hair that turned blonde right away.

  • DH is half Scottish, half Italian but looks like the very stereotypical dark haired/dark eyed Italian (his dad). His brother is MIL's spitting image (fair skin and blue-gray eyes). BIL's kid is also somehow super fair and has strawberry blonde hair and blue eyes - he looks like he's Scandinavian, not Scottish or Irish or English.

I'm blonde haired, fair skinned and have blue eyes (and so is everyone in my family, which is ironic given that I'm an 8th Native).

I would assume that this baby will look like DH's super dark/Italian mini-me given that DH is his dad's clone, too, but the apparently strong blonde genes might play a bigger part than I think. It's going to be interesting to see. :)

  • I always think it's funny that when my two older sisters were born, they had a tiny bit of super light blond super curly/fuzzy hair, then when I was born, I had a full head of straight black hair...so my dad joked that I clearly wasn't his.  Of course, out of the three of us, I look the most like him.  In fact, almost every feature that's 'genetic' is from him, I look nothing like my mom.

  • Me = light hair grn eyes
DH = light hair grey eyes

Odds are we will be having blonde haired light eyed children. Stepson is as blonde as they come :)

  • I've been wondering about this a fair amount partly because I just find it fascinating (my whole family speculated what my nephew would look like... my sister/BIL are both brown/brown, and he surprised us all by turning out blond/blue!), and partly because my DH's side is something of a mystery.  He was adopted, and knows very little about his birth family.

We're both short and have fairly pale skin.  I have nearly black hair and hazel eyes, he has dark brown eyes and hair that varies between red and medium brown (depending on how much time he's spent in the sun).  My hair is poker straight, his is curly.

Either way, we're pretty sure our kid will be short and freckly!
