NSAHM related...Boston traffic ?

We're traveling by car this week and need to cut through Boston midweek in the morning. We should hit Boston around 715am or so. Is the traffic really bad that early? I'm torn whether to take the extra time to skip around the city via 95 or drive through.

  • If you're a little earlier than 7:15, I would go through. If you're later, I would go around.

  • 7:30 or before you should sail through Boston. After that, try to avoid til 9:30 or even 10.
  • We live just north of Boston.  My husband commutes in every day.  If he does not leave by 6:15am he is screwed.  At 6:15 it takes him 30 to 40 minutes, any later it can take up to 2 hours.  7:15 is not really that early.  The south shore commute might be different, but I think it will still  be busy at 7:15.

  • I agree. It depends on where you're coming from. 95 can be just as slow sometimes. I usually just consult google maps. It provides real time traffic and gives the best option.

I live just west of Boston. If you are taking the Mass Pike (I-90) east to the Cape or NH/ME you'll be fine at 7:15. I used to do this drive everyday.

  • We're torn between taking 95 or 93 to New Hampshire.

  • I would take 93 North

  • If you are coming up 95 (from RI), I would stay on 95 and then take 93 north when they intersect again above the city.  93 is a clusterfuck all the time and many times you cannot predict it...I have gotten stuck there on a Saturday evening at 5 pm.

I used to live in metro west and now live on the north shore and have been taking 95 for months back and forth and it really won't be bad at that time of day.

  • Agreed with 95 - never seems as unpredictable as 93.
  • 93 passing through the city is always a nightmare. I lived in the city and commuted to south of the city once a week at 6:45 am and the traffic both ways was still bad.
