Potty Training

Need your advice!

My DD is 2 1/2 years old and has seemed "ready" for the last three months.  About two months ago, we started PT.  She did really well for the first two weeks (only accidents were #2), the third week she didn't seem as interested, but still went most of the time and the fourth week she went away to her grandparents and came back where she wanted to have nothing to do with going at all.  I tried all over again, but she just would not use it.  For the last three to four weeks, I've been asking on occasion (and on a very slight occasion she will go), but not pushing it by any means.

We have tried stickers, M&M's, skittles and also telling her if she stops wearing diapers or pull-ups, that we will take her to get the Rapunzel tower that she wanted once in the store.  She gets excited about the tower, but then has an accident (while wearing underwear) fifteen minutes later (even when I've asked as reminders in that time frame).  We just haven't figured out what motivates her enough to go.  I don't know if she's just too immature to understand what we're offering and what the conditions are, or if she just doesn't care.

I'm open to any and all suggestions!  I go back to work in a couple weeks, and would like to her to at least go back to trying regularly so that daycare can follow through, without them doing ALL the work.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Re: Need your advice!

  • Is she in pull-ups and diapers during the day still?  Was she in underwear before and now she's back in pull-ups?  Did the Grandparents give any indication of what went on when she was with them?

  • You may need to wait awhile (maybe about a month) and not really talk about it, as in don't ask if she needs to go to the bathroom or if she wants to try. Just give her some time not really thinking about it and then try again.
