Gross!

I found a huge scaly patching my 2 1/2 year old's scalp. I'm so grossed out. Eczema runs in my family, but this is narly! I'm planning on using coal tar shampoo on his head, but this kid hates washing his hair. Anyone have suggestions on getting their kid to wash their hair or with scalp eczema?

Re: Gross!

  • I don't think that's eczema. It's probably seborrhea. Try Selsun Blue. It has to be that kind, not Head & Shoulders or a generic.

  • We've used original sprout shampoo and body wash since my first had eczema and both my boys do well with it.

  • It sounds wierd but let some vegetable oil soak on it then use comb to comb it out. Then give him a bath. The oil breaks down the scaly patch.
  • Sounds like cradle cap. You can use a little dandruff shampoo or you can wash his hair more often. Blow drying his hair will make it go away much faster.

  • My pedi recommended a dandruff shampoo, just be careful because it really burns if you get it in your eyes. I know that from personal experience! I read you can rub oil into the scalp too, and comb it out. I haven't tried it though.

  • Ds1 had scalp eczema when he was an infant. We switched to the Aveeno Eczema Therapy shampoo/body wash, and it seemed to help.

  • DS had really bad dandruff this past winter. I put a little coconut oil on his head and brushed it in. Then I washed it out. It worked wonders!!!
