Re: Come in new Kindy moms!!

  • We do!  Our first day was only 1.5 hours, but we got to preview a part of the class and then the parents got sent to orientation.  Everyone was excited!

  • DD had what the school calls Kindergarten Round Up.  Basically, DH and I went to school with her for 2 hours.  We got her settled in the classroom with the teacher and then the parents went to the cafeteria for an "orientation."  Her first full day (and bus ride) will be Wednesday.  That will be the BIG day.  I think overall she will do fine, but may get a little teary eyed getting on the bus.

  • DS started on the 8th and a parent had to go with him for the first day.  We found out his testing date and then he had to go for a full day of testing with just 2 other kids from his class and had his first full day with the whole class on the 16th.  He LOVES it and is having a blast.  He's already tired of me driving him to and picking him up from school so we tried out the bus yesterday just on the ride home and he loved it.  There are so many kids in our neighborhood that his bus only makes 5 stops and he's the 2nd stop...made me feel much more at ease when he hopped of the bus with the biggest smile on his face and started telling me all about the new friend he had made who rides his bus.

I got/get teary eyed when I drop him off in the morning and the teacher walks him into the building.
  • DD starts on Thursday.  Yesterday we went in for a 2 hour session where we filled out papers, met the teachers, and took our children for their kindy screening.  I am so nervous about Thursday, but I think she will be fine.

  • Wow!  Congrats to all the kiddos who have started!  Sounds like everyone is off to a good start.  I like the "Kindergarten Round Up" idea.  My school district does something similar, but it's in the spring.  Kids come in and meet all the teachers and go for a bus ride.  The bus can be nerve-wracking for parents, but both of my kids really liked riding the elementary school bus.  They always made a few friends.  And it's fun to meet friends in different grades.

I have big kids, and I still get teary eyed once they're on the bus and out of my sight.  My kids start on the 26th.

  • My ds starts Monday and we meet the teacher this Friday.  I love the round up idea.  I think if we had something like that here I would feel a lot less nervous about him going.

  • DD1 started today.  She likes it and is ready to go back tomorrow but she couldn't open her bottle of water at lunch and didn't ask for help so the second she saw me, she pulled it out of her lunchbox for a looooong drink :(  She also just informed me that she got in trouble for talking.  On her first day of school.  It's going to be a long time until graduation!

  • DS started last Wednesday. First day he went willing but told me he cried a little in the bathroom at lunch because he missed me. Broke my heart. It's been a week today since he started and we are doing much better. His lunch comes back barely eaten and another parent told me it is because the young kids are use to taking their time eating their meals and at school it goes much faster.
DS seems a little scared/sad each morning as we drive to school but when I pick him up its all smiles and he has tons to tell me. He has told me that there are a lot of kids at recess and I can imagine that is pretty intimidating for him.
All in all drop off is the hardest part for him (and me). Also he is not much of an early morning eater so its a challenge to get him to eat some breakfast before we leave. We are doing better though. And I no longer get misty eyed as I drive away lol
Tonight is back to school night for us! DH and I are so excited to go meet the teacher and see the classroom.

  • DD started yesterday.  She said she liked it but they didn't play enough and she was bored.  I think the teacher is going over writing and letter sounds.  My daughter has been writing since 3 years old and she can read books, so she doesn't need to practice letter sounds.  I may have to talk to her teacher about an accelerated program. Other than that, she did very well.  She was not nervous at all going in there and she said the teacher was nice.  She told me she didn't eat lunch because it looked disgusting (her words not mine), so I will have to pack her a lunch going forward.  She also told me that it's another girl with her name (Kayla) that got into trouble for talking 2 times.  She said that girl needs to learn how to listen.  Needless to say, my daughter is going to be something else over the next 18 years.

Your DS sounds just like mine at that age!  It took my son a while to figure out how to handle recess.  Our elementary school is HUGE, so kindy recess can have close to 150 kids on the playground.  He figured out how to loosen up and have fun after a few weeks!

...And your DD sounds just like mine at that age!!  Proclaiming that lunch is "disgusting" is exactly what my DD would have done. Mine was an early reader who was precocious and mature in K.  Even though she already knew all the academic material, K was still really valuable for her in other ways.  She learned to work well with other kids, to deal with kids who were different from her, and to be more independent.

The teacher will most likely figure out within a few weeks who can already read.  If you're lucky, your DD won't be the only one.  In both of my kids' K classes there were a handful of kids who started the year already reading well.  Then the teacher can work with the fluent readers separately from the kids who are just beginning to do letters and sounds.

  • DD1 started this week. It was going ok and she was happy to make new friends but then we had an incident that I'll have to post separately about for opinions and now we starting with a new teacher on Monday! All in all it has been a rough beginning and not at all because of DD.
My 2 girls, both born on a Friday the 13th, are exactly 2 years, 2 months, 2 hours and 2 minutes apart! And Baby Boy joined us October 11, 2013! image

  • My big squish starts September 3rd. We will only be there for 45 minutes for orientation and settling her in. The next 3 days are half days and then Sept 9 she will be starting full day.

I am so proud of her and so sad at the same time. My first baby is starting school...

This is pretty common for kindy. It speeds up -- every grade starts with review in the beginning of the year.

  • DD1 started last week. So far, so good! She is in full-day kindergarten and doesn't seem to be having any issues with the transition, she's starting to remember more and more names, and today she has her first gym class.
