Longer than 3 hours between daytime feedings?

For those who schedule their babies: When can I try to stretch past every 3 hours for feedings during the day? My boys are gaining well at 5 weeks and are currently still asleep...nearly 30 min past when I usually feed them. I have been waking them, but I'm wondering when I can start stretching it. I don't want to get off schedule by just playing it by ear though.

Re: Longer than 3 hours between daytime feedings?

  • I think we moved from every 3 hours to every 4 hours right around 7 months. They weren't consistantly finishing their bottles so we stretched it out.

  • Honestly, I wouldn't stretch it during the day. We did every three hours for 9- ish months until they really got going on solids. This way you are getting as much as possible into them during the day so they can get through the night without them. I'd stick with every 3 during the day (not waking them though) and let them go as long as they can at night once your pedi ok's that. Can you feed them right before you put them down for a nap so they are up by the next feed?

  • We never moved from every 3 hours.  I swear it's one of the things that helped them STTN early.   They were getting enough during the day.

  • At almost 8 months we can only go 3 1/2 hrs maximum (that's if they have a bottle and solids). It does help them sttn to have as many calories as possible during the day. At 5 weeks I wouldn't be too worried about stretching out feedings....or even being on a strict schedule yet.

  • At 12 weeks we are still every 3 hours, but if they are asleep we will let them go a little while longer.

  • We moved to every 4 hours at 9 months, but that was with 3 solid meals a day between bottles.

  • Thanks for the info everyone. I guess it will be easier when they are eating solids. I feel tied to the house as I can't imagine nursing even one of them outside of the home right now, but that's just part of the game. :) We have given them bottles a couple of times while elsewhere, but that doesn't help the pumping situation. I better just be happy with how things are going!
  • My little ones are 11 weeks and we still do every 3-3.5 hours during the day but just thus weekend dropped a feeding at night and stretch those to 4 hours. currently we feed around 8pm-12:30am, 4:30am, 8am
Before that it use to be 8pm-11pm-2am-5am-8am. Still going every 3 hours during the day. I figure it will be awhile before I can drop the 4:30am feeding.

  • We changed to every 4 hour feedings around 5 months, because the babies simply weren't wanting to eat every 3 hours. They pushed the change It was a transition but now everyone is so much happier. And, wow, we can actually do some things outside the house, and they can take longer naps. They are hungrier by the time the 4 hours rolls around and drink more. We still usually have one night feeding but we only give them 3-4 ounces so they are hungry still in the morning.
