How many oz a day?

I noticed this weekend that DD is down to 20 or less oz a day now. Her norm was between 28-32 for the past 5 or so months. Coincidentally, I'm only pumping about 18 a day now. I worry she's not getting enough, even though she's pushing the bottle away halfway through her feeds or if I try and give her a feeding when she would usually want one. BUT, she cannot get enough of solids. Constantly wanting puffs, or a pouch, or throwing a fit if we are eating and she can't reach out plate.
Normal? Or do I just have a milk-hating, food eating monster on my hands?

Re: How many oz a day?

  • I'd go with the last option. I think if she's actually eating the solid foods and getting the same amount in ounces as she would in formula/BM she's probably ok. Just keep an eye on her weight if maintaining, then I wouldn't worry too much. Maybe check into the secondary formulas that they have setup for babies eating solids. From what I can tell they are the same as formula but has more calcium and more iron. It's kind of a replacement for milk till two years of age. Samples of those would be the Similac go and grow or the Gerber Graduates one.

  • I think that it's probably a phase. I've heard of many babies that go through these phases where they prefer solids for a while and then go back to only wanting milk and go on a solids strike. When O was sick she refused solids and only wanted milk which was very unlike her. Just follow her lead and if she's having enough wet diapers, gaining appropriately and continuing to hit milestones don't stress about it.

My pedi said that the norm is 24-32 ounces at this age but I don't really care what my pedi says about what's "normal" and I'm going to follow my baby's lead because every baby is different and every mother's milk is different (some fattier than others).

If you are worried about your supply dipping then add a night time pumping session once she goes to bed.

Oh, also try not offering her solids within an hour of when she is supposed to have a bottle. While it's okay for her to go through phases of liking solids more, you want to make sure her main source of nutrition is milk for the first year. Good luck!

  • We are formula feeding, and she gets between 20 and 22 ounces a day. Pedi thinks this is normal. I think so too. She eats 3 meals and 2 snacks a day.

  • As you know I EP too and so since I'm a freak about tracking ounces I understand your worry. I also wanted to let you know we dropped down to 20 oz, (4 5oz bottles) and she seems to be completely fine with that. It's been about almost a month of this and sometimes she doesn't even finish her final bottle. She is eating more solids and is happy to do such. Since I'm a freak I looked into calories that baby should be getting around this age because obviously the recommendation of ounces isn't working for us and girls at this stage should be getting around 600 calories (obviously I'm not calorie counting for my baby but it gave me peace of mind) 20 ounces is between 400-440 calories so I figure she's just fine! As long as baby is happy with less milk I think you're good. Sorry this is so long but I am in your same boat and my supply also tanked and I'm only getting about 17 ounces a day so I'm using my freezer stash but I'm also secretly glad she is taking less milk!
  • Thanks ladies! Good to know it's not only my child who has dropped, and yes I'm a freak and weigh her every two weeks to make sure she's gaining ok.
  • 33 everyday. Give or take. We ff.

We were having the exact problem with V. He was down to about 18 ounces a day of formula but would eat anything in sight if given the chance. We just had our 10 month pedi appointment. She wasn't at all concerned. She said minimum she would like would be 18 and max 24 or so. However, she told us if he is eating solids well to let him go and to try to get as close to 18 as possible but not to stress about it.

He gained a pound last month and trust me...he is not malnourished! LOL!

All kidding aside, she said as he takes more calories in "real" food, he will take less formula.

We'll see how this month goes!

  • So my Pedi told me that LO should be eating between 16-24 ounces per day along with 3 4oz portions of solids at 9 months.  So I was expecting a drop, but so far he is eating about the same as he ate before . . .

  • 20 if we're lucky, usually closer to 18 or so.  Dr. said to keep offering and said that we should really try for at least 20oz.  Now that he;s eating real food, he just couldnt be bothered.
This is us, I think right about 18oz, but he never took to milk much, prob never made it above 28 oz a day before.

Glad he's in the ok range by your pedi. Mine didn't ask or mention it much. I feel like he's ok,as long as he continues to gain weight. Not worried. :)

  • I was wondering about this too. I'm going  to ask my pedi at the appt on the 29th. I'm sure she won't be happy. But LO loves his solids.

Z gets 6-7oz of purees (mixed with cereal if too watery after thawing). He gets a 7oz bottle after his morning nap. He gets a 4oz yogurt and water or juice/water mix. 6-7oz of cereal or puree 2-21/2 hrs before bed. 7oz bottle at bedtime.
So Z only has 14oz of formula.

  • Normal, but I would still see if you can't get them to take a little more milk-- definitely keep offering.

Also, puffs are very sweet (4x more suger per gram than cheerios), and the pouches usually have banana or apple in them (despite the listed flavor) so they taste very sweet, too. I try and reduce the empty calorie fillers (like puffs) so there is more room for the more nutritious milk.
