At Home Sitter Question

Ok, I need some opinions of those who have been there -

I currently work from home and I'm looking for a sitter to come over a few days a week to help so I can actually work. I have had a lot of people contact me who have a kid or two that want to bring them with them. It makes sense but I don't know if it is right for me.

Here's the 411:

My house is pretty quiet. My son still takes 2 naps. He is still pretty dependent. He needs help eating and he is just starting to stand and I needs a constant eye on him. My house only has one crib, one highchair, etc.... so if someone brings their child(s) - I don't know where they would nap, or eat and how someone would be able to give my LO what he needs.

On the other hand, I feel it would be good for my LO to experience other children and having to 'share' time and toys, etc with someone else. I just don't know how it would effect his safety and schedule.

So I just want opinions for those who have been there and done that. Pros/Cons, etc! Thanks girls! :)

Re: At Home Sitter Question

  • If I was working from home I would not want extra kids there. Things are calm now but as the kids get bigger they will be running around and playing loudly which will probably get old.

DH works from home and wears noise blocking headphones constantly so he isnt so distracted by all the noise that our kids make with the sitter. I don't think he would be thrilled with more chaos added to the picture. He often has to go elsewhere to make important calls or he times phone conferences for when kids are at park etc.

  • This is temporary - I only need someone for 3 months - after that - I don't need anyone and starting in spring - I want to actually put my son in Daycare but for now - I feel like he doesn't get any socialization with other children. Plus I work in a sound proof room in my home. I'm a video editor so I need no sound to leak out so noise isn't an issue either.

  • I would be open to it, especially if I really liked the candidate.  As for equipment, do you have a pack n play for traveling?  If I had the extra stuff, I would let the sitter use it, but if I didn't have extras, I would make it a condition to her employment that she brings her own equipment for her child.  Are kids close in age?  If so, then I would be fine with them sharing toys.

  • In your situation, it sounds like a good plan, as long as the other child is close in age to your child.  You would want them to be on the same nap schedule.  The mom could easily keep a packnplay at your house for naps.

  • I don't think you will want the extra kids running around if you are working. Have you considered bringing him to a sitters house? Then he can play with the other kids and you get some peace and quiet.
