Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Teething, unswaddling, or hungry?

I originally posted this on the birth month forum but thought this section might be more helpful.

I feel like I'm back to the first couple weeks of my LO's life. He is waking up every few hours but I am not sure if it is because he is breaking out of his swaddle, because he is hungry or because he is teething. I have the miracle blanket along with countless other swaddles but DS breaks out of every single one. So, I am trying to transition him to the sleep sacks. I have started with one arm out and the end result: waking every 2.5-3 hrs. However, I can't tell if he's waking because he's broke out of the swaddle or because something else is wrong. I say he's teething because he is super fussy all day long. He is drooling like crazy and chomping at his hands. And DH and I both swear we see what looks like teeth trying to make its way out. I also feel like DS is hungry. He is 14 weeks old and weighs 16+ lbs. the doc cleared him for oatmeal if he started waking every few hours again at night (he was sleeping 7-9 hrs a night) I just can't read his mind. Should I keep going with the transition to see if he's just fussy because he's tired and waking up at night because he's not swaddled? (I usually have to nurse him back to bed though because he's frantic to eat) or is it a combo of that and his teeth?. I'm tired, baby's tired, we just need a solution or suggestions. TIA

  • get a tighter swaddle like a woombie. There is no escaping that thing. DS broke out of all his other swaddles as he got stronger and older. He is 16 weeks now. I still swaddle him and don't plan to stop until he rolls over. By then his Moro reflex should be gone.

You could try feeding him and see if that helps. DS is 18 lbs and still wakes every 3 hours at night. Occasionally he'll go for a 7 hour stretch. Personally, I would not start solids this young. First because they still have the tongue reflex which means messy times for you and second because there is no proof that solids help a baby sleep longer.

The reason why your baby is waking more is because his sleep cycles are changing. This is what they are supposed to do at this age. It's part of their brains growing and he will regress and progress this way for the first year of his life.

Remember, adults wake up during the night too. Try not to put so much pressure on him.
