Crib Wedge - question for BTDT moms

We received a Crib Wedge from a friend at our shower - we hadn't registered for it so someone went off the reservation and got it for us.   Before i just go and return it (thankfully, she included a gift receipt), i wanted to see if anyone here has used it, heard of it, has any opinions on it.

Thanks!

Re: Crib Wedge - question for BTDT moms

  • We got one.  Our friend recommended it because it is supposed to help with reflux issues if your baby has them.

  • From what I understand, crib wedges are really only used when your pediatrician recommends it for reasons like an ear or bronchial infections. I don't think they are to be used on a regular basis.

I would maybe see if you could pull up the exact product online and see the reviews, precautions, etc. I think I would just be nervous about having something else in the crib if it was unnecessary.

  • It's one thing if you need them for a medical condition like reflux or something, but I would not be putting anything additional in the crib just because. Anything you add to the crib poses some level of risk, why add it if you don't need it?

  • I personally have never bothered getting one. If my kids were congested or they had an ear infection we used a pillow to elevate the head of their crib. I am sure it would work well if the child had reflux but other than that I do not see a point to it. Maybe keep it until you knowd if your LO truly needs it and return it if need be.
  • I'm not saying you should use it but this is my 4th baby and I have used one for each of my kids. The reason is, when a baby is laying flat on their back and they spit up they could choke. I feel that if baby is propped up some that the chance of them choking is less. We roll towels on each side to kind of cradle baby to prevent from rolling over.

  • I would return it and only repurchase at the advisement of your pediatrician. The Rock-N-Play is good for keeping babies safely at a slight angle.

I was told by the nurse doing our child safety class that studies show children will instinctively turn to the side if they spit up (which would prevent the choking). I haven't researched this any further, but it's an interesting thought.

Might wanna rethink your antiquated terminology. This is a offensive as calling something "gay." We're allowed off the reservation now, being as its 2013.

Ok I'm showing my ignorance because I thought this was a typo for registry. What exactly does "off the reservation" mean?

It used to be that Indians had to check in and out in order to leave their reservations. So it was always noted that the "Indians are off the reservation". Now its used a a derogatory term to mean that someone has done something stupid.

Unless it was just a typo by the OP- reservation vs registry. I suppose...
  • I'm a FTM, so please feel free to ignore me, but I've read you should never use those wedges unless your pediatrician specifically tells you to. The PP who said babies instinctively turn their heads is right.

  • You're supposed to leave everything out of the crib except the sheet and the baby so I'd return it.
  • I would return it too. When baby had some congestion we used phone books under the legs of the crib. It made for a slight tilt without the risk of putting things in the crib. Plus a humidifier.
  • Heard of it but at the baby care class at the pediatric office they said its not safe to use. Unless medically necessary to help baby with flat head but can simply just roll up a small blanket or towel to use behind the baby's back.

  • My son had reflux and it would have been nice to have one, but I don't think it's ever necessary. If it was me, I'd keep it and return it later if we didn't end up using it
  • I would return it. Here they recomend elevating the head end of the whole crib by putting a solid piece of wood under 2 of the legs for congested babies and for reflux. That way there is nothing for the baby to get under or inbetween in the crib.
