Heating pad?

For the past few days, I have been getting pains and cramps in my pelvic area. Does anyone know if it would be okay to put a heating pad on that area to soothe the cramping? I am thinking no, but I figured I'd ask in case anyone heard anything from their doctor about this. Thanks!

Re: Heating pad?

  • I'm sorry I don't have an answer; I'm following to hear what everyone has to say. I have a rice pack that I've used for ever (heated up in the microwave for a couple mintues) for period cramps and such, I've used it occasionally in the past couple of months to ease cramping but I don't heat it as long as I normally would have.

It didn't occur to me that it might be harmful because it's definitely under 100 degrees F, which is what I have read in a few places to be the rec' for hot baths or hot tubs during pregnancy. I could be wrong.

  • From my experience, I'd say no. It's not recommended to over-heat your uterus area; it could have ill effects on baby. Same reason why saunas and hot tubs are no-nos.

  • My doctor said no heating pads, they dont want your body over a certain temp.
  • no excessive heat. pads, sauna, hot tubs, etc. i would call OB and ask for alternative ways to sooth the discomfort. GL hope u feel better
  • I would say no to the heating pad. My dr said that biofreeze is safe for aches and pains and also warm baths under 100F. When pregnant with DS I would soak in a lukewarm bath when my back and hips were sore, it always helped me get some relief.

I hope you can find some relief soon!
  • For my first pregnancy, I would lay in the bath tub with the shower running on my belly. It felt amazing. I would take 2-3 showers a day sometimes! However, I don't have time like that these days ;] but maybe it would help someone else.

  • Thanks for all the tips! I'll try a warm bath and see how that goes!
  • I went to my OB today on an emergency basis because the pain in my abdomen was sooo bad that I couldn't get out of bed Sunday and this morning. I couldn't drive or go to work is what that bad. I was freaking out to no end and was miserable. Shooting pains and what felt like cramps were happening all night. After an US and checking my cervics she recommended Tylenol and a heating pad. She said the baby was fine and that I was having growing pains... these were NOT like that with my DD!! For the first time since Saturday I feel "pregnancy normal". I saw this thread yesterday and told her that I'd heard it wasn't good for the baby and she said it was fine. I've had that thing on for like 4 hours and I feel so much better.
