Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Colic???

Every evening my LO is super fussy from about 4:30pm to 7:30pm. She cluster feeds and still doesn't get enough so I end up giving her a bottle of bm and cries and fusses. She also shows clear signs of being tired but fights it with everything shes got. Is this colic or is she just fussy and tired at the same time every day? FTM, and curious, thank you!

  • how old? How long has this been going on?
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

  • Pretty much all babies are fussy in the evenings, especially when they're that young. Commonly called the "witching hour." Cluster feeding at that time is also very common.
Colicky babies cry allllll the time and are very difficult to soothe, no matter what you do.

DD2 was 'diagnosed' with colic because of stretches of inconsolable evening crying. It was worst from 2-6w and from 4pm-10pm. She didn't want to nurse or take a paci, she would just scream. It was very hard. It has started to lessen (she's 8w now) to only 2-3 days per week and the relief for H and I is wonderful.

Colic is a tough thing. It's really just excessive crying; I think doctors use the standards of at least 3 hours per day, 3 days per week, for 3 weeks to officially call it colic. But it's still hard to say when it's colic and when it's not. And there's nothing to be done about it, anyway.

Regardless of diagnosis, lots of crying is hard on mom and dad. It's short lived, though, so hang in there. The best thing for my LO when she's having a fit is walking and more walking. Putting her in a wrap and walking is the best.
