Crib to toddler bed

My DD is almost 2 and with another LO on the way we are planning for her new room. What should I expect for transitioning crib to toddler bed? Do I need a toddler bed or can we use a single bed with extra side?
What was your experience when you transitioned? Was there some sleep regression?
Thanks! :)

  • A single bed with a side will work just fine - a toddler bed isn't necessary. You can also put one of those pool noodles under their sheet which will act as a bit of a bumper to keep them from falling out.

Expect several nights of walking kid back to bed, then back to bed, then back to bed, and then back to bed. The more you have a routine established the better.

  • Conversions to the toddler bed have been super easy for us. We transitioned DD at 15 months and DS at 20 months. We kept everything about their bed the same, just switched out one side for a toddler bed rail. I would definitely get a rail and put something soft beside the bed, we have a folded quilt by DS'S toddler bed. They roll a lot when they are younger. DS rolls out of bed quite often yet. DD, 3-1/2, hasn't rolled out for a few months. Toddler proof the room- don't leave anything you don't want them into out at their level, take out furniture that can easily tip over or be scaled (DS climbed up his diaper changer once), if you have stairs get a gate so they cannot get out of their room without you knowing.....Good luck!

  • We went from a crib to a a queen size at 2 years. We did have the mattress on the floor for the first bit, but gradually added the box spring and the the frame. At 2 and a half he has had the full bed for two months.
