Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When did your PP pain and issues resolve?

I am 3 weeks, 3 days postpartum. I am still bleeding, It still stings when I pee. I still have hemorrhoids. My body still aches. I am still really sore down there.

Admittedly, I had a complicated and intense experience in the hospital -- you can read the whole story here: https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12014190/mariam-s-birth-story-easy-labor-difficult-recovery#latest

To summarize: I went septic, had a D&C, had a severe tear, hemorrhaged, and received 4 blood transfusions. I know I'm lucky just to be alive and  as active and well as I am after the ordeal, but I'm sick of the after pains. I am taking tons of vitamins and supplements to try to heal a little faster.

How much longer will I be feeling this way? BTDT Moms, when were you feeling normal again?

Re: When did your PP pain and issues resolve?

  • The after pains should be letting up now. The tear can take while to heal and unfortunately hemorrhoids can take months to clear up. Take your stool softeners, eat tons of fiber and drink a lot of water. I had a super easy labor and push out with both kids and no tearing the second time, 2 stitches the first and I was just feeling better at the 3 week mark. I would expect that it will take you a few more weeks with all the complications. Sorry mama! Rest and go easy on yourself.

  • I'm almost 11 weeks PP and still have hemorrhoids. If I walk too fast or for too long, I'm sore. My crotch sorta hurts when I wipe. It was about 6-7 weeks before I could walk at a normal pace instead of super slow. And I had a pretty typical labor and delivery! So after all you've been through, continue to take it very easy and let yourself recover. Six weeks is the standard "recovery time" given, but it really take your body a full year to recover from pregnancy and delivery. Hang in there! It will get better.

  • I had a 4th degree tear.  The pain subsided around 13 weeks. At my 6-week PP check-up the doctor said I was "healed" but I would be sore for a bit longer.  I felt almost normal around 11 weeks.  As far as hemorrhoids, I don't know much about those.  Good luck.  I hope you feel better soon.

  • I'm still recovering from my episiotomy.  It sounds like you had a really rough time.  I'm not surprised you're still feeling it!  Give it some more time.
  • 7 wks PP here after a C-section with hemorrhage, D&C, and transfusion too. I've just started to feel back to normal although I'm continuing to have joint pain and body aches. Even went back to Zumba! Hang in there, take it easy and enjoy your little one, you deserve it!

  • Thanks for posting. I had a similar experience - complication free pregnancy, easy delivery (literally 3 pushes), hemorrhage 6 days PP leading to transfusion and D&C, and then another hemorrhage 6 days later. I feel like i'm 1 week PP instead of 3 weeks, 2days :(. Things are healing and the soreness is reduced....looking forward to feeling normal again.  I still use the peri bottle which is soothing since baths are a no-no.
  • I had a vaginal birth ( with vacuum assist ) and 2nd degree tearing. I also had hemrroids. I stopped bleeding at 4 weeks, and the soreness went away around the same time. At 6 weeks now and I still have chafing (sp.) and a bit of oozing-- not blood, but discharge. I wear super thin panty liners now. The stitches have healed and I've been given clearance for sex! Ugh, not ready. Hang in there!
  • I had what I think was a pretty normal birthing experience (2 hours pushing, 2nd degree tear). I stopped bleeding around 2 weeks PP and had a bunch of lochia until 5 weeks PP, when I got the heaviest period ever (I'm not BFing though). I'm 6 weeks PP now and everything is still a little tender. The thought of wearing jeans still makes me cringe, but it's so much better than it was. In my experience, it was horrible up until it was fine. Like it happened overnight or something. I kind of planned for 6 weeks of hell and it wasn't that long, but with a C-Section I would expect 8-12 weeks. There's a reason maternity leave is covered under FMLA- it's no joke! Hang in there, give yourself time.

Also, the sitz bath was pretty awesome.

  • I had a fairly easy, but long delivery, although she was sunnyside up. I had a second degree tear. I was about 5 weeks pp before things stopped hurting, although I had pp bleeding until 7 weeks. Sex was painful until about 10 weeks.
