New mattress smell- yuck!

We just got our new mattress delivered today and it stinks.. I sort of forgot how mattresses smell when you first buy them- like yucky chemicals! Luckily we're out of town tonight so windows are open and fan is on, but I'm worried about tomorrow night. Any experiences with new mattresses and whether its safe to sleep on them while pregnant? Im assuming yes but its just hard to imagine its safe for anyone given the smell! I figured I'd ask here before trying my doctor. I didn't have much luck with a google search.

Is it a regular mattress or one of the memory foam ones? A friend of mine just got a memory foam one (some knock-off brand) and it had such a strong chemical smell she had to return it.  Hopefully airing it out will make the smell go away!!

It's not a memory foam, just a regular one with a pillow top. My mom had the memory foam and same thing happened to her- she ended up returning it.

What a bummer. We were planning to get a new mattress soon, too. Let us know if the smell is gone when you get back home!

That's a bummer! We just got a new one and ours didn't smell that bad. Hope it's ok to sleep on bc I have been!

There is something called off-gassing and honestly it's not great to be around. It's good you will be out of own tonight. I would probably prop the mattress up on its side and not put sheets on right away.

Thanks. We didn't prop on its side but it has no sheets on and I left windows open and fan going. Hopefully it's better by tomorrow otherwise I'm going to have to crash on the couch..

Off-gassing is actually really dangerous. NASA actually rejected many memory foam prototypes due to harmful effects. If you didn't buy a green mattress then it is recommended that you let it air out for at least 2 weeks. Until the chemicals dissipate a bit. Breathing problems and nausea are the most reported side effects within the first several days of use. Hope this helps.

Well this makes me worry! I didn't even think about it. We slept in it 2 nights then went out of town for a week and a half and have been sleeping on it since. I guess I will sleep somewhere else tonight and air it out tmrw. Anyone know how long this lasts?

Thanks everyone. When we get home today I'm going to see how the smell is. I looked up our mattress and apparently it does have some memory foam in it- which I didn't even realize. I'm a little nervous about it and may end up returning it, we'll see. My mom thinks I shouldn't worry too much about it but that's not in my nature (worry wart to the max)
