man toothache?

Does that exist? Like the man cold, but a toothache? Because, seriously, DH went from being perfectly fine 15 minutes ago, to now writhing in pain on our bed. He ate chopped banana and nectarine with yoghurt for breakfast, and he says that's when it started hurting. The tooth isn't heat/cold sensitive. That's all the information I've been able to get out of him so far... he just keeps saying, "I don't know!" through clenched teeth, and rolling around on the bed. I had to retreat to the kitchen because I couldn't stop giggling. He's been given a double dose of extra strength Tylenol. Of course, when I suggest going to the clinic or calling our dentist, he says no.

Re: man toothache?

  • I think toothaches in general suck pretty bad. The difference is probably a woman will go to the dentist. Although I'm not sure what you do on a Saturday.

  • Which tooth is it? Is it pressure sensitive? Sweet sensitive? On a scale of 1-10, 10 being worst, what is his pain level (with and without the Tylenol)?
  • It's not pressure sensitive or sweet sensitive. And it's a bottom molar. He says it's a 9/10 on the pain scale, but he's out working in the backyard now, so I'm guessing he exaggerating... although whenever he sees me watching from the window, he makes sure he holds his jaw and moans a little, haha. I want him to call our dentist (he has an emergency #), describe his symptoms, and ask what he should do. He says he wants to wait a few hours.... if it was a 9/10, I don't think he'd want to wait a few hours...  /:)

It sounds like maybe a cavity being irritated (for lack of a better word) by the sugar in the fruit/yogurt?  I've had cavities that I didn't know about until something sugary got in there...

ETA: just saw you said it wasn't sweet sensitive.  I think men think if they don't give at least a 9 on the pain scale we won't take them seriously lol

  • I would definitely recommend calling your dentist and telling him/her what's going on. They will likely prescribe and antibiotic and pain med to get him through the weekend. I have gone into my office on several occasions to see emergency patients, so they may be willing to see him today. Hope he feels better.
  • I called our dentist and left a message on his cell asking for his advice. My FIL just came over to help DH in the backyard, and brought a box of Twinkies that he got for free that MIL won't let him keep, and DH is eating one now so definitely not sweet sensitive, haha.
He's definitely in pain, but I'm also positive he's playing it up for sympathy. I once had a filling fall out, and the toothaches I got from that were absolutely mind numbing. I would have rating them a 9/10 for sure, and I couldn't do anything but rock back and forth and try to remember to breath. DH is in the backyard using a sledge hammer....
