Maternity leave?

How much time were you given after a csection delivery? My babies are 5 wks old and im due back at work next week. I have been on antibiotics for mastitis for the last three weeks, I have had it twice. I also have been seen by my ob twice for stomach, not just incisional nerve pain that prevents me from wearing pants. I'm still wearing maternity skirts because they are lose. It hurts to hold my own babies against my stomach and I am a neonatal nurse and of course am required to hold newborns. My ob said I don't qualify for long term disability however I was just notified that my short term could continue if medically necessary. I'm scared now after our conversation that she will still say no even though it is still short term and not long term.

Re: Maternity leave?

  • In the state where I work, short term disability for a c/s is 8 weeks.

  • My short term policy covers for three months full time if a doctor is willing to fill out the paperwork saying it is necessary.

5 weeks just sounds too soon for a job that is at all physical. I hope you can find a way to stretch it.

  • It typically is 8 weeks for a c section so 6 sounds extremely short. I would express your concern and also the mastitis to see if she will give you a note out for a couple more weeks. You then can submit that to you std insurer and ask for an extension. Do you fall under FMLA? If so, you will have job protection up to 12 weeks though it is not necessarily paid.
  • I have used all my fmla, because I went on leave early for possible preterm labor however I am going to take baby bonding time if HR approves it which will secure my job 6 more weeks. Unfortunately it will be unpaid unless my ob extends my short term.

I thought that with a c/s, 8 weeks was standard.  And your hospital must have to adhere to FMLA, no?  You can take (not necessarily paid) leave under FMLA for 12 weeks...

I had to use ALL my saved up vacation and sick time during bedrest, so my maternity leave is 100% unpaid, but I'm taking at least 16w (our state medical leave entitles 8w per child) and may extend depending on our $$ situation and how flexible my work will be.

You used all 12 weeks in a 12 month calendar year? If so, besides an extended short term disability, I am unsure what you could do but I am pretty confident 8 weeks is standard so I would find out who your std policy holder is and call them directly. Your hr peeps may be really off so calling them directly would be your best shot. Good luck! That really does sick for you :(
  • 6 weeks for vaginal and 8 weeks for C-section. I thought that was standard.

  • I was told by Aetna who my STD is through that I am only approved for 6 weeks even with a csection with twins.  The only way to extend my STD is to have the doctor write that it is medically necessary.  It is unfortunate but I have been drawing STD since May when I went on bedrest so I am not too upset about it since I feel fine 3.5 weeks out from my csection.  It sounds like your situation should be medically covered for additional time though!
