Sleeping too much?

My LO is 6 days old and sleeps probably 22 hours a day. He is up for about an hour in the morning and evening. I have to wake him every 3 hours to feed him. Anybody else have a very sleepy newborn?

  • Its normal - baby's sleep especially newborns!

  • This is normal as long as your baby is eating well and producing the right number of wet/dirty diapers. Keep waking him up to eat around the clock, even though it might be tempting to let him sleep longer at night.

If you are BFing, be extra diligent about making sure the diaper count is right. While newborns sleep a LOT they should have periods of time when they are alert. Don't worry if diapers are good, but if not, then see an LC for a weighted feeding.

My LC just had a case where the mom was bragging that her 2 week old was STTN, and it turns out that the baby was actually failure to thrive and wasn't eating at the breast because he didn't have the energy to suck- all his little body was able to do was sleep. So sad!

That being said, if your LO is having at least 6 wet diapers a day, then enjoy the down time! Newborns sleep a lot and it's good for them.
