Nap sked?

So, at what point to babies drop from two naps to one? My son is 13 months, and he generally sleeps from 7 p.m. to 5/6 a.m. (10 or 11 hours) then he takes two naps of 1.5 to 2 hours each, for a total of about 13 hours a day. Usually his morning nap is the long one - which is weird to me, but whatever.

When does he go down to a single nap? 18 months? I'm going to let him be the guide - not force anything. I'm more curious as to what others experienced.

Re: Nap sked?

  • I've seen anytime between 10 and 18 months for the most part.  I think DD moved to a once-per-day nap around her first birthday to fit in with the DCP's schedule for the older kids, but she was on a once-per-day schedule at home (on the weekends) by 14 or 15 months.

  • For us it all depends on the day.  If he wakes up early (like before 7:00) he'll need 2.  Also, if we want to move bedtime a little later, like for a party or dinner or picnic, we'll encourage a 2nd nap.  If he wakes up later (after 7:00) he'll usually only need 1.

We're like you - the morning nap is always longer, usually about 2 hr 15 min.  If the 2nd nap happens, it's usually 45 min to 1 hr.  Also... 2nd nap is always a challenge, and I have to put a lot of effort to make it happen (usually rubbing his back for like 20 minutes).

Our days vary so much - once I go back to work in the fall, I expect he'll get on a little more predictable of a routine.

  • I don't remember exactly when he dropped it, maybe close to a year and a half.  He use to nap around 10 am and 1 pm as an infant, then eventually dropped down to the 1 pm nap.  He dropped his naps all together around 3.5 - 4 yrs old.

  • I've heard it's usually around 15 months, but of course it's an average, so every baby is different.  My LO will be a year next week but has transitioned into the next room at DC so he only gets one while there.  On the weekends we're still doing 2 naps, though.
  • Both of my kids dropped the 2nd nap and did a long mid day nap around 1 yo. Is your LO in DC? It was easier for me to follow the DC schedule.

  • DD did around 15 months, and DS did around 11 months. I work at a day care in an older infant room and we work on that transition in my room. I've had some drop the morning nap as young as 9 months, and some were still taking two naps at 18 months. Once they move to the Ones department, they only get one nap. This does not happen as soon as they turn one, as we keep them in one classroom for 12 months; from school year to school year.
