Babies: 0 - 3 Months

3 wk old doesn't burp?

DH and I are having so much trouble getting three week old DS to burp... We try to burp after each feeding and he always gives us weird grunts but he only seems to actually burp 10% of the time. I think I read that EBF babies may not need to burp as much as babies that use bottles but is this limited amount of burping normal? I get even more worried because he does seem to have quite a bit of gas coming out of the other end that seems to irritate him a lot so I'd like to reduce that if possible.

  • My DD rarely burps too. She is 2 weeks old today and I have only got her to burp a few times. She's our third child and I had no idea some babies were so difficult to burp! Our pediatrician said that some babies just don't need to after eating and if she's comfortable when we lay her down, not to stress about it.

  • I was told in the hospital and by our pedi that EBF babies don't need to he burped unless they show signs of distress. We NEVER burped my DD. My DD sometimes needs it but not all the time.
  • I FF, but was having trouble getting my son to burp.  I started sitting him on my knee and lightly bouncing him and that seems to work really well!

  • DD was EBF and rarely burped. DS seems to be the same.

Unless she seems to be uncomfortable I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Thanks all. That is good reassurance.
  • My son rarely burps, but definitely makes up for it with his toots, lol. Glad to know this is normal for ebf babies!
