Trouble STTN

My LO was sleeping through the night starting around 5 months but at 6 months started walking up around 2x per night. I would feed him and he would eat well and then fall back k asleep. Last week he slept through the night but now is back to waking up one time per night. He isn't hungry and doesn't take a pacifier. I have tried just rubbing his back, rocking him but he just wants to nurse. I have also tried letting him cry it out but he doesn't stop! If I let h nurse he is sleeping within 5-10 minutes. Any suggestions? Bedtime was at 8 but now we do 8:30. Thanks in advance!

Re: Trouble STTN

  • STTN for a lot of kids is sort of a two steps forward one step back process.  Has he hit a new milestone, sitting/crawling?  Sometimes when they take a leap ahead, they want to keep practicing even at night.  Is there someone else who can go in besides you?  Maybe then he wouldn't expect to be nursed.

  • No advice, but just wanted to say I understand what you're going through. DS was STTN and now he's back to waking up every 3-4 hours (which is really only twice a night, so I'm not complaining too much as it could be MUCH worse). DS eats both times he wakes up though, so I think he's just needing more calories right now. I have kept bedtime at 6:30 (his choice). Hopefully they start sleeping again soon!

  • I'm not nursing anymore so I don't know if this is possible but maybe try making the late night nursing sessions shorter and shorter until he doesn't need it anymore. Or try cluster feeding him right before bed, like nurse him, do your bedtime routine and then nurse him again this way he gets a lot before bed and won't necessarily need to wake up for more at night. I know you said he's not hungry but if nursing is the only thing that puts him to sleep maybe he is. My LO sleeps through the night for the most part, if he does wake up I try and soothe him and if that doesn't work I do a bottle and he's back to sleep in no time.
