I think I had to get my vent off my chest and now I feel better so i deleted it;) but seriously it is by far the least enjoyable part of my job and I think I will seriously consider not pursing jobs w mgmt responsibilities on my next job search whenever that is....if it is possible, which it might not be. Sigh.

Re: anyone else hate being a manager?

  • Feel the same way...I was a manager for 3 years and I hated every minute of it.  So much so that it was affecting my regular work.  So I just started a non-managerial job and I LOVE it!!  Being a manager is not for everybody.

  • I wish I had read your post before the delete.  I have always been against becoming a manager because I hate the idea of having to rate other people.  I know their raises and bonuses depend on it.  Plus, what if I had to lay someone off?  I can't handle that hypothetical stress!  But I'm at a point in my career where there isn't much more I can do if I stay technical, so I'm starting to think about management....

  • I hated it.  I would much rather be an individual contributor because the hassles and stresses of managing people are so annoying and distracting to me.  If I take the next step at my company I will have to manage people again so I keep stalling.  I just don't want to.  Blah.

LOL it was mostly like what a time suck it can be to have to deal w/ performance improvement/objectives/documenting, etc.. and how when you like the person as a person it makes it that much harder and how I'm not very assertive & good under pressure w/ unexpected circumstances/requests.
I have had to let 2 ppl go at a past job but both were soooooooo blatantly needed that I didn't feel that badly. But, it is the in between people that get me- sub-par but not doing anything really terrible, kwim? Those are the ppl that often just slide by & probably the same that drive everyone else crazy b/c they're not really doing their job to the extent they should be, but the time & effort it would take their manager to continually address it is something many managers don't want to deal with...

  • I think one of my issues is that at my last position, I managed more ppl but most of them were in entry level type positions or younger than me or less experienced,  so there was also a coaching role and motivation on their part, they were looking to be promoted or move to a different job to get a promotion or go back to school, etc. That is not the case where I am now.
  • I agree, groovygrl. It is the C-/D+ type of employees who suck up all your time and energy and at the end of the day they truly DGAF what happens as long as they keep getting a paycheck.  I just can't relate to that mentality and it made me insane.

  • At my annual performance review last year I was offered a promotion, but I turned it down because I did not want to manage a staff of high maintenance women.  To this day I'm happy with my decision!
  • I feel you.  While I know it's probably affected my career projectory, I just have NO desire to manage.  I don't doubt I'd be good at it - but... just not interested.  While my job is boring, it's not very stressful, and I like that.
