How many clothes? (Lurker question)

Hope you all don't mind me asking you the annoying question of how many clothes you had in the beginning! I got a ton of hand me downs from the SIL, but in the 0-3 area there isn't much. I have a good amount of fleece and cotton pants (probably about 8-10 pairs), but only a handful of onesies (maybe 7 or 8) and only one footed sleeper. There are zero long footless pieces.

I obviously don't want too much in this size range, but based on your current (and past) experience, what would you buy more of if you were me, if anything? We have way more stuff in the 3-6 month range, but definitely feel lacking in the early months.

Thanks!

Re: How many clothes? (Lurker question)

  • Both my DS and now DD lived in the zipper footed sleepers, so easy and comfy for them. 0-3 lasted us at least two months, I actually just bought some more for DD today!

  • Thanks! I'm thinking I should get some cheap footed get-ups at the Carter's outlet, like 2 or 3. Between that and the onesies + pants, it seems like I'd be good for a few weeks/months.

  • I agree that more footed sleepers would be a great idea. I also recommend sticking with the zipper ones because those snaps are a pain in the butt in the middle of the night!

How many onesies you want depends on how often you want to do laundry. We sometimes go through three outfits in one day due to diaper issues, spit up, breastfeeding messes, etc. I thought we had enough when our LO was born but ended up going to Target and buying some more.

  • @blueturkey - thanks! I'm going to just get a few footies, then see how it goes when the baby comes. There seem to be some cheapo ones at Target - like $8.99 for a set of two from their Circo brand.

  • I would get more newborn outfits, and perhaps wait to cut tags off and wash until you bring your baby home. We had some, but not a lot. Some days we go through 4 oufits because of diaper blowouts, spit up, etc. DS was born at 6 lbs 13 oz and was too small for even some newborn stuff. We just switched him at 5 weeks to 0-3 and some 3m carters outfits, but he is still swimming in some. He is now 10lbs. His 3-6 month outfits look enormous!

@redhead - I'm so clueless as to how big babies are! I look at the 3-6 months stuff I have and say "OMG, this is so tiny!", but I know that relative to a NB, they are actually big.

Thanks for the tips! I may get some gowns in NB size to start (we have 2 pants and 2 onesies that are NB size). Thankfully I still have some time ;)

  • Definately more footed sleepers, with hand flaps would be good too. We wash clothes a lot so we could have done with 5 onesies or so instead of the 50 that we have! It really depends how big your LO is. Ours was under 7 pounds and at 6 weeks still wears NB size. I wish we had more NB stuff and less 0-3. We literally had almost nothing for her to wear out the first couple of weeks since everything was so big!

  • When are you due and where do you live? Since DS was born in may in the South, all summer I just had him in onesies at home and the onesies that were shorts when we go out. He's 11 weeks and I put his first pair of pants on him this week. We got like 5 footie NB pjs for him and he only fit in them for like 2 weeks. Since your LO is probably a fall baby I'd get some long sleeve onesies. I bought a bunch from our Carter outlet. Also wait on footie pjs if you and/or dad is tall. We are a tall family and DS cannot fit his feet in the feeties. So I'm going to pick up more full pjs in size 6-9 but without feeties and just put socks on him if needed. I'd get a few more of Carter's basic onesies (like 5-7pack) with their coupon. By far my favorite onesies and wash up way better than Gerber ones.

Lastly, if LO likes to be swaddled you can get away with just putting them in a onesie because the swaddled are really cozy.
  • On the one hand I'd recommend getting more in the NB size. But on the other hand, I'm surprised at the amount of clothes we've received since he's been born. Tons of onesies, outfits, and gift cards.

Maybe have 4-5 onesies and 2-3 pants and then 3-4 sleepers (of each size.) Keep in mind my LO came three weeks early. He's a month old today and still in his NB sizing. He's only 7 pounds so I think he'll be in this stuff for another two weeks (they grow an ounce/day or about a pound every two weeks.)

Also they go through clothes quickly - I can go through 4-6 changes/day with my LO. I am constantly running the washer/dryer which I dont mind, but sometimes I'm excited to get to the 0-3 size just b/c we have so much more on hand already!

  • I second the PP that said to wait on the footies if you or DH are tall. We have a ton and DD grew out of them by 2 weeks. Her legs are too long and her feet are too big! She can't even wear most 0-3 footies because of this. She is 4 weeks.

  • I've got about 15 onesies but definitely could have used more pants for going out in public as I have a bunch for 3mo and up (he's 6 weeks). I wish I would have had more footie pajamas, mainly because they are so stinkin' cute! I would do laundry so DS could wear my favorite before he grew out of it which was last week :(. I would suggest a couple of cute outfits to wear for special occasions, weddings, and such.

  • With DD I had about 10 footed sleepers, 10 onesies, 6 pairs of pants, and a few dressier outfits in newborn size. She was 6 lbs 2 oz at birth and fit in the sleepers until 6 weeks and the rest of the newborn clothes for 2 1/2 months. She had probably 50 onesies in 0-3 Months, and tons of pants, sleepers, and outfits. She wore that size until she was 6 months old though, so we got a ton of use out of everything. The majority of her clothes were Carters, she was long and skinny and they fit her the best.

I would definitely get at least 6-8 more footed sleepers, depending on how often you plan to do wash. That's pretty much all our baby wears around the house with a onesie underneath. We only dress him in "real" clothes when he is going somewhere. I would not bother with the sleepers that don't have feet because the baby's feet get cold, and socks fall off half the time. I think you are pretty good on pants unless you are sending the baby to day care, and they need extra clothes. I would probably get 3 or 4 more onesies because those are the first to get dirty if the diaper leaks. I would also invest in some sleep sacks or swaddles if you don't have any of those.
  • We ended up needing preemie clothes and just switched to newborn at 3 weeks. People brought us tons of clothes after LO was born. I have kept tags on all new stuff bigger than NB in case the season changes before she can wear it.

  • Thanks everyone, I appreciate the insight! I'm hitting up Target tomorrow after my OB appt, so I'll pick up some stuff there.
