If you rent (or know anything about it)...

can you tell me how much it costs in your area?  We can get a nice two bedroom apartment for $550, but that is too small for 5 people.  Plus no garage, and we would have to pay for a storage unit.  Houses are $675-$700.  We saw a 5 bedroom, 3 bath house last night, but they want $900-1000 depending on whether they do the mowing.  DH about choked.  He was hoping to get someplace cheap, but everything cheap gives us the creeps.  We just need a place to live while we build our new home, but we probably won't start building until next spring.  DH keeps comparing the rent to what kind of house we could buy for that amount in rent.  We are in a LCOL area.

  • We own in Miami, never will rent again!!
    Talking to friends from hometown.
Average 2 bedroom condo is $1500
A house can go up to $3000.

  • Wow, you aren't kidding about LCOL!  Here a 2 bed 1 bath apartment will run you $1,000. If you hit a deal you'll get a 1 bed for $800. I pay $1850 for a 2 bed 1 bath SFH and it's an amazing deal. The cheapest other rental we've found in this town (chosen for schools) was a tiny crappy place for $2700. We really lucked out and found a not yet listed property.

  • A 4 bedroom home in my neighborhood rents anywhere from $1500-$2000. A three bedroom apartment is $1200
  • A 3 bedroom house in my area is between $800 - $1000 /month, not including utilities. You could get a 2 bedroom apartment for $550 - 650 ish. A 5 bed room house would probably be about $1500/month but those are all in nicer areas so you would have access to good schools. I live in a LCOL-MCOL area.
  • Rental prices really vary here. Before we moved into our house we were living in an apartment that was 2 bed,1 bath and about 750sq ft. We were paying $685/month in rent. The house that we are currently renting is about 1400sq ft with 3 bed, 2 baths and partially finished basement, huge backyard, detatched garage and sunroom room. We pay $800/month. There are houses about a mile or two away the same size or smaller that would rent for $700-$1000. It really just depends.

My mom and I just looked for apartments and houses for my grandparents to rent. You can rent a 2BR apartment in a nice area for $600-700. A 3BR house would rent for closer to $1000. My parents ended up buying a foreclosure and fixing it up so it would be affordable for my grandparents.

ETA it depends on the area. H and I have lived in several places. One place we lived we were able to rent a 3br 2ba townhouse for $950 but another state we lived in we paid $1400 for the same thing.

Maybe I will just tell DH it could be worse!  : 0
These are old farm houses, but the one we saw last night was at least updated.  Has a three car garage and a barn stall that DH could use to store his bass boat.
We are seeing another one tonight.  It is $675 but has been a rental for awhile so I am not sure what to expect.  It has an in-ground pool, but you have to pay for a certain company to open and close it.  Not sure how much that runs.  (You don't have to use the pool though.)

  • There are so many factors in this- but before we sold our old home (4 bdrm 2 bath, finished basement, 2 car garage and large fenced yard), while it was on the market, we toyed with the idea of renting it if it didn't sell in 6 months.  We were told by some realtors that we could rent it from $1600-$2000 a month.

  • Wow, I live in a fairly LCOL area but the prices you mentioned are less than here.  A nice 2br apartment is 700 or so.  Any type of house will be a minimum of 750-800, with most being 1,000 or more.   We rent a 2br, 1.5 bath, townhome style duplex with unfinished basement for less than the cost of most 2br apartments...there is no bad part of town here but I will say there are a lot of characters on our block.

  • We pay $1300 for a two-bedroom apartment. We could be paying a decent-sized mortgage for that price, but we're waiting to see where DH's new job ends up being before we buy anything.

  • I want your rental prices.

Our 2 bd/ba apartment is $800 a month, and that's a good deal for the area we are in. It's 1100 sqft.

::sobs:: you have one more bathroom and 100 more square feet than my SFH AND you're paying $1050 less per month!

  • holy crap! Where do you live, i want to move there!
We live in a crappy city, and we pay $900 for a tiny 2 bedroom apartment, with no yard no garage, no nothing. Thats just rent we pay utilitys on our own.
We are thinking about moving a town over, which is a much nicer place to live and for the apartment we are thinking about they are giving us a deal (a friend of a friend) its $1000, tiny 2 bedroom. 2nd floor. They normally rent it for 1300.
Right now you cant get anything really for less then 1000$ the place we live in now is really cheap.

  • oh and to rent a house, its like 1600-2000+
  • we rent a town home- 2 bed. 2 and a half bath.2 car garage. 2000 sqft. we pay $1000 a month in rent. nothing is included- cable/internet, electric, water, sewer are all separate.

We are currently renting a 3 bedroom townhouse for 2,300 north of Boston and it is a bit rough around the edges for my tastes (the place is safe, it is just old and not upgraded).  We could have gotten it for a bit less (around 2,100) if we signed a year lease, but it is just temporary for us.

1000 is dirt cheap around here. Heck, anything under 2000 would be cheap.

  • We live in a lcol area. We rent a 3br 2ba, 1000 sq ft duplex with fenced in backyard and a storage shed for 500. However, that is a bit cheap for the area. In most areas around here, that would cost 650 or so.

My parents rent a 2500ish sq ft 3 bed 2 ba for 1000.

We live in San Francisco and two bedroom rentals go for $3000-$5000! Small houses go for $7000 or more. The housing and rental market are crazy here and price are topping the highest 2007 prices. You'd be shocked at the run down, piece of junk that sells for over a million.
Same here. The rental we are in now is $3,200 and it's only 3bed/2bath. Oh, and it's priced nearly $800 UNDER what the market is charging now.

I choke and gag anytime this board talks about home prices. Good luck finding a home (and I mean apartment/condo/townhome/SFH) under $875K in my neighborhood that doesn't need another $250K in upgrades and retro-fitting. Ugh...

  • A 2bwd/2bath apartment will run you about $1,600. A 3 bed/2bath will run you $1,700-$1,800. A single family home runs $2,000-$3,000

  • We rent our house to BIL/SIL and they pay $1400 for a 3/2 with no school system. We rent a 3/2 in the best school system in the state for $2400.
  • Oklahoma - We rent out our old house (2 bed, 1 bath, bonus room) for $750.  It covers the mortgage.  We need to sell it, but our renter is basically paying down the principal for us.

  • We pay $920/month which includes storage but we live in a horrible suburb 30 minutes from the city. Bad schools, bad shopping, and virtually nothing to do (we are planning on moving soon). If we wanted to live downtown, a 2br would run about $2k - $3k/month. We used to live 2 miles out of downtown and paid $1400/month for a 2br/1ba.

  • We live in a LCOL area and pay $1320/month for a 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath townhome. That is on the upper end of rentals here and gets you stainless appliances, washer and dryer, access to a dog run and Ina nicer neighborhood.

  • These prices are either crazy cheap or crazy expensive where you guys live!

I am looking for a house for my BIL right now and his budget is $850.  Close to impossible.  There are a lot of bad parts of town where I live and that is the only place you can rent in that price range.  I would say a decent house is usually around $1200, but I would rent one for $1000.

I work for a property management company and our lowest rent is 450 (apt in shady neighborhood) and highest is 2500 (new construction w/ 5 bedrooms).

    I guess we are MCOL?
I would say low or maybe medium COL. A 5 bedroom house in my area would be $4500+ to rent, a new construction 5 bed would probably be over $5K.

  • I know I'm nosy mermaids but can I find out where you live?
  • DH and I are landlords, we still own a house at his last duty station and rent it out.  It's a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, attached garage on a little less than a quarter of an acre.  It includes a washer and dryer.  The renter is responsible for all utilities and lawn care.  Rent is a little over $1000 a month.
  • I'm a little late to the party, but we live in central MA and are currently renting. We pay just under $1200 for a nicely updated 2/2 with a small yard, garage and large deck. No utilites included. You won't find an updated 2-3 bedroom for less than $1000 here. And SFH? At least $1400-1500.

  • Wow, I never realized how much of a difference living in a LCOL area really made.

We pay $1500 for a 2bd/1bath townhouse in ok part of a nice beach community in So Cal. An older house in a nice neighborhood would be $2400 minimum (3 bedroom). Anything 4 bedroom or more would be at least $3K. If you are looking for something updagrade it would be $5K+ for anything.

I don't consider that LCOL, personally.
I'd say that's mid. Maybe I'm spoiled by my VLCOL, though.
