Hep Lock

I will have to get a hep lock due to being GBS+.  I know they can place it just about anywhere they can get a good vein.  Where do you prefer because I'm just trying to get some ideas?  With my first I have the IV in my hand and hated it.  Every movement I made felt like it was pulling out of the vein.

Re: Hep Lock

  • Not the hand. Not the elbow crease. And preferably not the wrist. You should have nice juicy veins with all the extra blood volume. Stay super hydrated and ask for the nurse to aim for a vein on the forearm, above the wrist. I was a l&d nurse and always thought that was the best place!

  • Good to know - my doc wants me to have one, but that's the only thing he wanted to change about my birth plan, so I'm ok w that - but I know friends who've had them in the crook of elbow and couldn't bend arm the whole time or to hold baby comfortably.  :(

  • I get mine in the left hand because it's my best vein, even pregnant I'm a tough stick.  The wrist is horrible.  Had one there when I was severely dehydrated and they had to strap my hand to a board so I wouldn't accidentally bend it.
  • On the forearm of your non-dominant hand.
