discrimination?

I'm a teacher for head start and I called my boss last week to tell her that I was pregnant so she would be prepared. She told me that she was planning to move me to a higher level classroom and I would receive a raise. Also it's better for my resume and it's not inclusion which I am now. Needless to say I was really happy. Now she just called me and told me that since I am leaving she will have to replace me with a certified substitute and so she can't give me the promotion and I'm staying head start for this year. I'm furious! If I never told her I was pregnant I would've had the raise! I just needed to vent. Thanks for listening.

Re: discrimination?

Agree with above, definitely call HR, a lawyer, someone.

  • It's not legal, right? I'm not one to make waves so I don't think I can call hr and then go back there without feeling like a jerk. I feel like I either have to quit and complain or just suck it up.
  • I think that warrants a call to the EEOC.

  • Definitely file a claim with the EEOC. I am going through a discrimination issue as well and would be happy to share what Ive learned what I know from it so far. If you want, pm me....just let me know you have so I know to check it. Good luck!
  • Talk to her first, let her know you feel you're being discriminated against. Let her know you do enjoy your job and feel as though you deserve the raise as you have earned it, (and being pregnant is a boost, not a problem). Go through the appropriate chain of command. If she continues to say she can't do it, let her know you intend to speak with HR and/or an attorney and follow the appropriate actions to be sure you are being treated fairly.
  • I told her I was upset and disappointed and she told me her hands were tied. She said we could talk about the promotion for next year but she was going to have to give this position to one of the other teachers.
  • Call a lawyer. That is illegal.

  • I am an attorney.  It might be illegal depending on several factors (size of school, state designation of school, was the position offered and accepted or was it just a general discussion, etc.)  There is no harm in calling EEOC and inquiring/file a claim.  They can direct you in how to proceed next should you wish.

  • It's a large school associated with different national organizations and is federally funded. It's in PA ( Philadelphia). I was told I was being moved into a higher level classroom. It was technically a promotion although she just called it a "move". She then said she couldn't because I would be taking time off.
