Bottle feeding question

Hi all. My son is 6 weeks tomorrow. I BF him since the beginning, and it just became a real stressor in my life for many reasons. At around 4 weeks, I found pumping and bottle feeding him was easier for the both of us. It took a few days for my son the get the hang of the bottle, but he eventually did and was easily drinking 4 oz.  at a time.  My issue is, the last couple of days it's like he never drank out of a bottle before. He drinks so fast and doesn't breath out of his nose, so he ends up running out of air and choking on the BM. Has this happened to any of you? I use slow flow nipples, and have tried 3 different bottles: the Medela brand, Tommee Tippee, and the Playtex Nursers. The Medela was the best one for him when he didn't have this issue. Is there a better brand out there for this issue, or is this something that he will just get through on his own? Any input is much appreciated. Thank you!

Re: Bottle feeding question

  • DD has been doing this at the breast. I don't know what to do about it. I look forward to seeing responses. She also did it when DH gave her a bottle, and now he's traumatized and refuses to feed her from one.

  • I have found that Playtex Ventaire bottles are very slow flow, even if LO tries to suck it down. I use those for bottle feeding during the night so that I don't have to worry that she's going to drink too fast and spit up alot. With the medela, which even though they are slow flow, she can chug an oz in like a minute, where with the Ventaire, it takes her about 3-4 minutes for an oz, granted, that's still fast, but it's much slower. The bottles are also designed to help eliminate air from getting into LO's belly, or reducing it at least, which is probably why it's harder for them to drink too fast.

  • We had a trivia at my baby shower for my first. Interesting fact I remember from the trivia is that babies can breath and drink at the same time until they are 6 weeks old. Never looked the details up, but my friend who put the trivia questions together is pretty thorough. That could be the issue.

  • Thank you for all the advice. Hopefully, we will pass this road block soon.
  • Same thing happened to us--we're now trying Dr. Brown's Natural Flow. It has a straw-like mechanism in the center and a natural flowing nipple. No more choking sounds, no more guzzling. Baby boy even stops to take a breather when needed.
