Quad Results - Not Good

I sometimes lurk here so hoping some of you might have experience with this or know of others who do. On Friday afternoon I received the news that my babies (identical twin boys, 16 weeks) have a 1/15 chance of being born with down syndrome. While that is a 6% chance, this was quite shocking and devastating as not only did we do genetic testing of our embryos prior to transfer, but a few weeks ago received the results of our Harmony 21 as having a 1/10,000 chance of them having Downs. FYI, I will be 37 when I deliver.

We are in a state of shock and confusion. I suppose anything is possible, but I can't imagine that the wrong embryo was implanted and that the Harmony results are false. From reading a lot online I have read that a lot of people have shown a high risk and ended up with them not having a baby with Downs. I have also read the quad test is not very accurate with multiples.

I am waiting to get scheduled for a level II ultrasound and in the meantime riding this roller coaster of emotions.

Re: Quad Results - Not Good

  • I hope all is well. I know at my practice they defer to the Harmony (MaterniT21) results, so hopefully that is the case, or a CVS can rule out Downs. Will be thinking of you and hoping your wait to find answers is short. PS I am also a wine lover born in 77 ;)

  • As you said in your post, it's only a 6 percent chance. Not to say its not scary to go through, because it is, but that also means there is a 94 percent chance that everything is fine.
So yes you will read lots of stories of people who had similar risk levels and ended up having perfectly healthy babies, as is the overwhelmingly most likely thing to happen in your case as well, especially because you did testing before.
    Are you considering an amino?

  • We are not considering the amnio because we will keep the babies no matter what.  Plus, I am delivering at a hospital with a NICU and one of the best MFM units in the country, so I feel confident that they will get the care they need.

That was my thought as well.  If you need a definitive answer, you may want to consider an amnio.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

Sorry, just read that you didn't want to do an amnio.  But there are other reasons to get it besides terminating the pregnancy, and one is peace of mind or allowing you to prepare mentally and get informed if they do in fact have downs syndrome.  Of course, you have to decide if the risks are worth it.

  • The fact that you tested your embryos prior to transfer would be reason enough for me to think you are not in the 6%.

This is what my OB said also. We did have the u/s to check lengths and my baby B had a higher chance of Downs then her siblings she is fine. Good luck.

  • I agree with PPs that said the quad screen is notoriously unreliable for multiples.  I would try not to worry and defer to the Harmony results.

    Hang in there.

  • I agree with several previous posters. My OB didn't even offer the test because it is not accurate enough. I hope you get more answers soon and until then try to relax as best you can.

Same for us. I'd defer to your Harmony results. I bet they are perfectly fine.
