Pumping question

I am EBF my three week old and Friday I have to take one of my furbabies to the vet. My mom is going to watch DS for me and I was going to pump a bottle for her in case the appointment takes longer than expected. The appt is at 3 and I was going to drop off DS with mom shortly before. Is it safe to pump before I leave and just keep the bottle in the diaper bag or should it be put in an ice pack? Hoping he won't need it but I figured just in case and I'm not sure how long breast milk can be safely kept out of the cold. TIA

Re: Pumping question

  • The lactation specialists from my delivery hospital and a Medela handout I received from the breastfeeding class I attended said that breastmilk is okay at room temperature for 4-6 hours. So if you pump just before you drop off LO with your mom, you should be okay if she needs to use it within that time frame.

I follow those time frames with my pumped milk with LO and I've seen no negative effects if used within 5 hours.
