Bleeding... 36.5 weeks....

So, last night as I was getting up from the couch to go to bed I felt a trickle and went to the bathroom. Looked down to find blood that had gone through my underwear and shorts. I sat down on the toilet and *gush!*. I thought it was my water that broke, but all I saw was blood. I woke up my boyfriend and we went to L&D. I could barely walk because of bad lower back pain.

Once we were there they had me wait a while then put monitors on me. Everything looked good with the babies and there were small contractions. I told the nurse what happened, so she looked down there and saw that there was blood and checked my cervix which she said was closed and bumpy(?). She called the on call doctor and he said he wasn't concerned because I wasn't bleeding while I was there. So they monitored me for about 15 mins and sent me home. They didn't check anything else. At all. They said sometimes these things happen and some people bleed and that sometimes it's nothing....

Once I got home, I went to the bathroom and when I wiped, there was discharge and still some blood, but brownish. Then around 4am there was some discharge and brighter blood, but not a lot. And again just now (around 745am) it was the same again with the discharge and some bright blood.

I have an OBGYN appt this morning, but I am so irritated that didn't thoroughly check everything with the babies before sending me home. :(

Anyone go through anything like this? I just don't know what to think and have been worrying all night. I will of course be talking with my doctor this morning.

  • They didn't hook you up to the monitors or anything?

Let us know what your OB says today. Good luck!

  • Yes, just the monitors. And they said since things looked ok there, then they weren't concerned. I just figured with being considered high risk with twins they would have done a little more to make sure the babies were ok. I just kept thinking maybe it's something with the placenta? Just waiting until it's time for my appt.

I'll let you all know what the doctor says. :) Thank you

  • Definitely keep us posted - I am glad they at least checked to see that the babies were ok, but how strange to not investigate where the blood was coming from.

  • Did they even check to see if the fluid was amnoitic or not?  It sounds like the worst L&D checkup ever!  Hopefully you got more answers at your docs this morning.  I agree with PP that it sounds like it could be placenta related.

  • UPDATE: I went in to see my OBGYN this morning and she checked everything. Thank goodness!! She checked my cervix and it's still closed. She still saw blood, but she also couldn't figure out where it's coming from. It doesn't drip into my pad, it's just there when I wipe. I wore a pad all day. It finally seems like it's going away now. (It's 5:25pm now.) She checked my blood pressure 3 times and made me stay to get an ultrasound (I'm so happy about that). They checked the babies, the fluid, and placentas. Everything looks good. And at 36W4D my babies are measuring at 6lbs1oz and 6lbs3oz.

So after everything, they couldn't tell me where the blood came from, I'm still in some pain, but the babies are doing great. And she said (in her words) "rest and nothing in the vagina." :)

    Thank you everyone!

  • Can an u/s and tests always detect a placenta abruption ? Blood and pain is a red flag.
