Sleep training?

Hi! I am a FTM to a baby girl...she just turned 2 months old. Right now she sleeps in her vibrating/bouncy chair in our bedroom. She never would sleep in the bassinet when we first brought her home. During the day, naps have usually been in the swing or she wants to be held. I love holding her but I can't all the time obviously. I am concerned as she gets older these habits will continue and I want her to be able to sleep in her crib....so I need to start getting her used to her crib. I am not a believer in the cry it out method..esp. since she is only 8 weeks old. So yesterday I tried the crib for her daytime naps. I put her down after I rocked her and put her down in the crib. She wakes up like 20 min. after. I comfort her but she was hysterical so I just picked her up and rocked her. Any advice? She still gets up 1-2 times a night(feeding-formula) so I still want her in our bedroom a little longer. She has had some nights of sleeping 6 hours straight. Should I try to have her sleep in bassinet again in our room? then crib when she is older? or keep her in bouncy chair at night and crib for naps?? I am confused. I read so many things and it justs overwhelms me. Any advice?

Re: Sleep training?

  • I've been having a hard time getting my LO to nap in his bassinet lately so he mostly naps in the swing.  At night he sleeps in his bassinet until about the third stretch when I just bring him into bed with me.

I would like to have him in my room for 6 months, so I will have to try him in a pack n play in our room when he outgrows his bassinet and then I will put him in his crib.

I really don't have any advice because it seems like as soon as I have it 'figured out' it all changes again!!

  • Let baby sleep wherever baby will sleep, as long as its safe. They are not going to get spoiled this early. You can try to transition for naps, but don't stress if it doesn't work.

My DD slept in her PnP for seven months in our room. She transitioned to her crib just fine.

You can't spoil a baby this young. Let go of that notion first.

I'd try nighttime switching first. Use a swaddle and get her to sleep, then try putting her flat for the night - agree with the above about this still being in your room. A swaddle makes them feel more secure and lessen the occurrence of the Moro reflex. I also put a rolled-up receiving blanket on either side of my LO from shoulder level down to make her feel more secure on her back. My girl will sleep flat for 7-8 hours at night but will only nap in the swing or in my arms.

    Good luck.

  • I'm glad you asked this. My dd will not nap unless I rock her then I put her in her crib. She's three months. Sometimes she does wake after minutes. She will only nap flat on her tummy. She won't in anything else. At night she will only sleep in the rock and sleeper.  I think a lot of it has to do with the closeness they feel. I wouldn't worry too much. She's still very young and I don't believe you are spoiling her.

Ditto this exactly. DD slept in her co-sleeper until about a week ago, and she just turned 8 months. She napped on me until she was about three months, every now and then in her PnP. I started putting her down for naps in her crib around three months, and they were definitely shorter than when she was being held, but that changed after a little while. But ditto PP, don't stress too awful much about sleep training just yet, especially not CIO.
  • Try not to worry. DS1 slept in his rock and play until he was 6-7 months old and napped in his swing until he was 5 months old. When we transitioned to his crib,
